On June 9, the Russian media shared video footage revealing the humiliating defeat Kiev forces suffered from while attempting to advance near the village of Orekhov in the Zaporozhye region a day earlier.
The video shows two German-made Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks and five American-made M2A2 ODS infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) which were destroyed or heavily damaged during the failed offensive. Several other vehicles, including additional Leopard 2 tanks, American-made MaxxPro mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles and Soviet-made BMR-2 mine-clearing vehicles, were abandoned by Kiev forces.
The attackers were initially slowed down by anti-tank landmines and dragon’s teeth anti-tank obstacles, and later reneged with artillery fire and airstrikes. Attack helicopters and tank hunters also played a key role in repelling the attack, according to the available information.
Russian Minister of Defense General Sergey Shoigu said in a statement that up to 1,500 troops and 150 pieces of armor from the 47th mechanized brigade took part in the ill-fated attack.
Kiev forces lost a total of 30 tanks, 11 IFVs and up to 350 personnel while attempting to advance, the minister revealed in his statement.
The fact that advanced NATO equipment recently supplied by the West, like the Leopard 2 tanks and Bradley IFVs, took part in the attack proves that this was not just a “shaping” or “probing” operation, as claimed by the Ukrainian and Western media. Kiev forces were clearly attempting to hold ground and failed in doing so.
Ukraine was promised around 90 Leopard 2 tanks and more than 100 Bradley IFVs by NATO states in recent months. Most of these equipment were delivered before the beginning of the so-called spring counteroffensive on June 4.
The humiliating defeat of Kiev forces near Orekhov confirms that these weapons, which were promoted as Wunderwaffe by the mainstream media, can’t change the balance of power in the battlefield. The Russian military remains the dominant force.

i am nott sure if russia has currently the escalation dominance. russia is forced to hide in uts defense lines. so it is a force excess of ukraine there. but most import is that ukraine is only loosing manpower and equipment without any success. maybe in the summer russia gets the initiative back and can be successful when the afu is depleted from its attacks.

it should also be mentioned that in the past 70 years there’s probably nothing that raised russian morale as much as the start of this ukrainian counter offensive lmfao. we all anticipated that ultimately the imported western tech will be inevitably destroyed, but the sheer level of carnage is beyond anyone’s expectations. these poor sobs can’t even make it to the front lines….
russia is actually making some gains in the north around kupyansk. not much information on it but looks like actual shaping movements. the russians are probably planning to retake the norther area in a few weeks to months once the ukrainians die down a little more from these heavy losses in the south.

the ukrainian choice to attack like this may in fact indicate their depletion. they are pulling all their last resources in. remember that the ussr was still defending against german tank attacks using their shovels in 1945 at lake balaton, so the russians are aware that defense is the right thing to focus on when the other side is stupid enough to throw everything in

possible. the russian general staff, are all seasoned professional soldiers, and are all at an age where they know what they are doing, if any slip up they get replaced, even in ww2 it was not uncommon for generals to be replaced with more capable generals, it is the same in every army around the world, no matter which uniform. military conflicts are a harsh but fair teacher.

essentially it shows how hard it is to attack. both sides found it difficult. i think the ukrainians are missing the initiative from the point of view that they need a d-day scale operation, not sending once company at a time to its death. in the iran iraq war 80,000 iranians died in one day in certain battles. waves of troops and tranks with artillery and air support.
no, ukro tactic is ok. but attacking prepared defenses was difficult even in ww2 (kursk), today is much worse. we are not talking about some tribal army like iraq but real defenders with modern weapons. even in syria it was extremely difficult. so these small formations have better chance of survival (or retreat if it fails), send an entire brigade and it will be a bloodbath.
