Early on September 28, a massive blast rocked the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, killing one and wounding more than 100 others.
Videos circulating on social media showed a massive fireball then a column of flames and smoke rising into the night sky over Tashkent.
The blast emanated from a warehouse near Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport, Uzbek news website Daryo reported, citing a statement by the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The ministry later confirmed that the fire had been contained.
“The area of the fire is being reduced,” the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. “The situation is completely under control.”
The ministry said a “special laboratory” had been set up at the scene to investigate the blast, without providing any further details.
Russian state news agency Tass citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that the warehouse that blew up was owned by Inter Logistics LLC.
From its side, the Ministry of Heath said that a teenage boy died after a window frame fell on him, adding that 24 people had been hospitalized, but faced no threat to their lives, while 138 were treated for injuries.
With an estimated population of more than three million, Tashkent is the largest city in the Central Asian, former Soviet state.
