On July 26 afternoon, a series of large explosions rocked al-Saqer military camp near the district of Dora south of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Al-Saqer military camp hosts forces of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) as well as the Iraqi Federal Police. Large quantities of ammunition, which were stored in the camp, exploded. No casualties have been reported, thus far.
Iraqi Security Media said the ammunition exploded as result of “high heat” and “poor storage”. Nevertheless, sources affiliated with the PMU rejected these excuses.
Sabereen News said the camp was bombed by the U.S. military. The Telegram channel released a photo showing an armed MQ-1 Predator drone flying over al-Saqer military camp after the explosion.

The channel also shared the testimony of an Iraqi federal police officer who said the camp was targeted by the U.S. military.
In October last year, a similar explosion took place in al-Saqer military camp. Back then, many Iraqi sources said the explosion was caused by a drone strike.
The U.S. may have attacked the camp in response to recent rocket attacks on its troops and diplomatic mission in Iraq. Washington believes that PMU-affiliated groups are responsible. If the U.S. was indeed behind the explosion, tension between the coalition and the PMU will probably rise.
