Massive Explosions Rock Syria’s Damascus (Videos)

A series of massive explosions rocked the western outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus, in the early hours of August 13.

There was no immediate statement from the official Syrian Arab News Agency on the causes of the explosions or their exact location. Videos that surfaced on social media suggest that the explosions were the result of an uncontrolled detonation of ammunition. No casualties were reported.

In an interview with the Virginia-based Alhurra TV, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group of unknown funding, alleged that the explosions were the result of a missile strike that targeted an ammunition depot of Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

These claims are highly questionable, especially considering the fact that Syria usually acknowledges such attacks against its territory.

The explosions came after a series of Israeli strikes hit military positions near Damascus on August 7. Four Syrian service members were killed and four others were wounded in the attack. This was the first Israeli attack against Syria since July 19, when fighter jets reportedly carried out strikes against targets in Damascus, wounding two soldiers.

Israel carried out hundreds of attacks against Syria in recent years under the pretext of preventing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from establishing a lasting presence in the country or smuggling advanced weapons to Hezbollah. Israeli officials rarely acknowledge these attacks.
