On August 16, the militant operations room in the southwestern Aleppo countryside declared the villages of Banes, Birnah, al-Ottomania, Hwair al-Eis, Tell Bajir, Judiydah, Zummar and Jizrea a “military zone” and ordered civilians there to evacuate their homes within 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is massing hundreds of its fighters in the southwestern Aleppo countryside. The UK-based monitoring group added that a large convoy of the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) carrying several heavy weapons has arrived in the area.
Some Syrian opposition activists claimed that HTS has deployed its force to deter the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL). However, other activists believe that HTS, the TIP and the NFL may be planning to launch a preemptive attack on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in southwestern Aleppo.
In late 2016, HTS and its allies launched a similar preemptive attack on the SAA in the city of Aleppo. However, the SAA repelled the attack and neutralized most of HTS’s units within a few weeks and then liberated eastern Aleppo. This scenario may repeat itself in southwestern Aleppo.

Not a good example though as that offensive broke through SAA lines despite the best that the RuAF and SyAF could do. It took them weeks to close the gab again. Al Nusra and the other headchoppers were at their high water mark back then and it wasn't one of the SAA's most shining moments. Similarly the two Hama offensives that these headchoppers launched at the end of 2016 and early 2017 weren't shining moments of SAA defensive capabilities either, as it had to halt all operations elsewhere so it could race its elite units back there each time. The only good that came out of those battles that it caused the Jihadis to lose so much manpower, weaponry and resources they have not been a danger ever since. As was proven by the SAA's Idlib offensive of late 2017, when the Jihadis proved powerless to stop it and had to go cry to their big friend in Ankara, Erdogan, to make it stop. A far better example of how impotent they've become would have been the string of offensives they've tried to launch in late 2017 and this year, that even the lower tier SAA units guarding this front were able to repel with ease.
Good post. The rats are much weaker than in 2016, compared to the power SAA can now concentrate on this front.
