Pro-militant sources argue that government forces have launched at least 3 rockets with chlorine gas at the militant-held city of Douma in the Eastern Ghouta region, near the Syrian capital Damascus. According to reports, the rockets hit the western neighborhoods of the city and injured few people.
It’s interesting to note that the reports about the alleged chemical attack appeared after the Syrian Arab Army and its allies had achieved a notable success in the battle against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) in the province of Idlib.
Meanwhile, clashes between militant groups and government forces were also reported in the areas of Harasta and Hawsh al-Dawahirah in the Eastern Ghouta region.
The number of reports about civilian casualties and alleged chemical attacks will likely grow as the Syrian Army makes more progress against the so-called “moderate rebels” in the province of Idlib and the Damascus countryside.

‘Government forces’ are using fuel-air explosive-tipped IRAMs on them. They’re good at head-chopper extermination, especially in confined spaces. I think the US has claimed FAEs are more ‘humane’ because they can clear a few upper floors of a multi-story unit without using 10 tons of HE munitions and dropping the whole building. That’s only when we (the US) use them. If anyone else the US doesn’t like uses FAEs, then it’s obviously inhumane and a war crime.
Chlorine is a residual contaminant in some forms of FAE fuel production reactions. Some percentage of FAE fuel does not burn or detonate in an explosion. If either the bursting charge or the secondary detonation charge failed, then you have 10m cloud of either evaporating or aerosolized FAE fuel. It would have to smell something like a combination of engine starting fluid and bleach, I imagine.
Of course OPCW inspectors are always going to find some amount of residual chlorine at the sites. What they don’t test for or find is the FAE fuel, itself, because that’s not their job. Their mandate is to look for CWs, period. They don’t care how it got there.
