An armed group calling itself “Ahrar Jasim” released a video on March 14 showing an attack on a convoy of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the governorate of al-Quneitra.
A military truck was hit with an improvised explosive device (IED), which had been planted by the group’s militants. The attack reportedly took place in the town of al-Hijah.
Ahrar Jasim didn’t announce the results of the attack. However, the available information indicate that no one was injured or killed.
Last year, the SAA launched a large-scale attack on the opposition-held areas in al-Quneitra. Back then, radical militants surrendered within a few days and accepted an evacuation agreement, while Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters joined the reconciliation process.
The attack in al-Hajjah is the first such incident in al-Quneitra since its liberation. The nearby governorate of Daraa witnessed similar small-scale attacks in the last few months. A group by the name “the Popular Resistance” claimed responsibility for these attacks.
Local observers believe that these attempts to disturb the peace in southern Syria were orchestrated by radical groups, such as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and ISIS. These groups view the success of the reconciliation process as a threat to their influence.
