On August 27, members of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) and its allies launched an attack on positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the town of Abu Dali in southern Idlib.
According to pro-government sources, the miltiants engaged SAA positions near the villages of Tal Maraq, Salmuia, Jaduia, Sham AlHawa, Abi Omar. At least one suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device was employed by militants. Firefights are ongoing in the area.

A Russian observation post is located near the town of Abu Dali. Therefore, by advancing in the area, militant groups are as always aiming to attack in the area where they can theoretically make some damage to Russian froces deployed in the country.

In rational economic terms the Gulf State and NATO continuing to sponsor the militants is classic sunk-cost fallacy, as the militants have strategically failed to achieve their goal, in so far as they can no longer seriously threaten Syrian state institutions or structures. But the Gulf State and NATO axis have simply shifted their strategic political goal, as whilst their immediate regime change plan has failed, they are now content to impose the maximum damage and disruption to Syrian state for as long as possible. This correlates with fundamental US foreign policy pattern – as easily witnessed in current US policy toward Iran and Venezuela – where the US State Department believes, despite little rational evidence to support the belief, that by collectively punishing and terrorizing another state, through imposed economic and military mechanisms, the population will eventually turn against its own leadership, and hand over sovereignty to US approved vassal representatives.
Yes, I can see your point, but that strategy doesn’t works any more, people of those oppressed countries coming to mind and clearly see what is going on. And those too, that aren’t oppressed yet, can see what was all about in other destroyed countries for example Libya, that was sister country in political and other terms to Venezuela and Bolivia too. They are both Islamic extremists and wage-paid mercenaries of Gulf States and NATO. All the hardcore militants that evacuated to Idlib have scant options for any future, in any other role than expendable Islamist mercenaries, and as for the many foreign recruits, the way it works is they don’t get to join clandestine international terrorist networks, with the pathway knowledge this entails, and then simply return to their country of origin. Gulf States and NATO spent years creating a recruitment network far and wide to find such Islamists – and they control and own them.

Because the entire Idlib offensive could have been avoided if only they refrained from shelling and attacking SAA troops and Russian positions. If they hadn’t by the Astana agreement nothing would have happened. But apparently scoring short term brownie points with their own followers is more important then long term survival of the Idlib Jihadistan reservation. They have poked the bear and reaped the whirlwind, and now they keep on poking the bear. While they seem capable of adapting their battlefield tactics, when it comes to long term strategy they never learn.
idlib is crucial for assad in recapturing the entire syria – there is nothing to negotiate about and being backed by russia’s jets the outcome is certain and after that they will turn right and head for the north east and the kurds. pls also note that russia already has made some inroads east of euphrates by bombing specific targets. kurds will have to give in against turkey and syria and the unhinged states of A can’t do shit about it!
When Trump blocked F 35 sales to Turkey he killed all hopes for the jihadis in Idlib. Turkey now will play ball with Russia much more and happily trade in the crazies in Idlib for the right to do so.

Likely you are correct to some extent. However, had Turkey abided by the Astana agreement, it is likely the government would have attacked anyway. Like they did in the south and where they later started murdering the reconciliated disarmed rebel leaders that remained under SAA control.
Assad does whatever Putin allows him. Turkey has more or less claimed Idlib as its sphere of influence. Putin wants Turkey in its sphere of influence. In the grand scheme of things Idlib is of little strategic importance nor of any threat to Assad. As such if Turkey had made the headchoppers behave and not poke the bear I doubt that Putin would have allowed Assad to move into Idlib. But Turkey did not make the headchoppers behave, and they did poke the bear. And kept on poking the bear.
Its interesting to see where the SAA has chosen to advance into the Idlibistan Terrorist Reservation. Did they move to create a better security buffer to protect Aleppo? Syria’s biggest city? Where the frontline basically sits adjacent right next to the city? Nope. Southern Idlib and Latakia. Which so happens to be the places that the unruly inmates kept launching attacks towards the Russian airforce base. Which leads me to suspect that securing this base was the main motivation behind the SAA’s offensive, and why Putin was deaf to the pleas of Erdogan to stop the offensive into his sphere of influence. The Jihadi’s had poked the bear and the bear finally had enough.
