In the noon of March 13, radical militants launched a long-range rocket at a residential area in the city of Lattakia. One civilian was reportedly injured as a result of the attack, which also caused material damage in the district of Qneinas.
Lattakia is the biggest city on the Syrian coast. The city is located only 17km, northwest of the Russian Hmeimim airbase.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, militants launched the rocket from their positions in the northern Lattakia countryside. The region is a part of the demilitarized zone, which was supposedly established around the governorate of Idlib last September under a Russian-Turkish agreement.
A day earlier, militants launched a barrage of rockets at the northern and northwestern districts of Aleppo city. One civilian was killed in the attack and three others were injured. Syrian and Russian warplanes carried out a series of heavy airstrikes on militant positions in southern Idlib in response to the attack.
Pro-government sources believe that the rocket attack on Lattakia will not go unpunished. The upcoming hours will likely witness a new wave of Syrian and Russian airstrikes on militant positions in northern Lattakia.
