Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies have repelled a new attack by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) on al-Katibat al-Mahjura in southeast Idlib.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the army launched an assault on the area in the early hours of December 14. However, the attack was repelled within a few hours.
Al-Katibat al-Mahjura [the abandoned base in Arabic] is a former Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces (SyAADF) base, which overlooks HTS-held Umm al-Tinah. HTS captured the base from the SAA earlier this week.

This was the second attempt by the SAA to recapture the base. The first attempt, which took place two days ago, failed due to the fierce resistance of HTS and its allies.
According to the London-based monitoring group, 30 Syrian personnel and 15 militants of HTS and its allies were killed around al-Katibat al-Mahjura in the last few days.
Idlib is witnessing a rain storm. This creates difficulties for Syrian and Russian warplanes that support SAA troops. The weather will improve in the next 24 hours. With air support, the army will likely make another push to recapture the base.

HTS, 12,000 fighters max, probably way less, most likely only 6 to 8,000 fighters now. Al Nusra front + allies, 20,000 max, probably way less, most likely only 12 to 16,000 fighters now. Unaffiliated terrorists and militias, 15, 000 max, probably way less, most likely only 8 to 10,000 fighters now. Turkish supported NFL, FSA, SLF, SNA, in Idlib, Hama, and Latakia, max of 45,000 but probably less, more likely it’s 30 to 35,000 fighters left, a lot of them, 15 to 20,000 went to Aleppo to assist in the Turkish invasion, so Erdogan has about 30,000 fighters there too. So an absolute max of just over 100,000 Turkish backed fighters in Idlib, but that’s pushing it, it’s more likely to be way less than 75,000, maybe even as low as 60,000.
But the SAA now number 200,000 soldiers in total, and Assad can include another 100,000 fighters from his independent pro government militias, so that’s at least 300,000 fighters in all, 300,000 fighters pitted against 75 to 100,000 fighters, why are we at a stalemate, in any terms thinkable these are overwhelming odds, the SAA should be obliterating the terrorists even without air support. Looking at syrialiveuamaps it shows the rain is no deterrent at all to the terrorists, they’re taking full advantage of the rain and hitting the SAA hard, so I’m sure the SAA could be doing exactly the same thing too if they were allowed to. I hope when they recommence airstrikes they drop the last few days worth of bombs off at the same time they drop the new payloads, make up for the days they had off and give the terrorists a double whammy.
