On September 8, unknown militants shelled the civilians areas in the towns of al-Suqaylabiyah and Salhab in the northern Hama countryside with Grad rockets, according to the National Defense Forces (NDF) media center. Local sources said that eight civilians were injured in the shelling, one of whom is in a critical condition.
In response to the attack, the Syria Arab Army (SAA) launched dozens of rockets at militants’ positions inside and around the strategic town of Qalaat al-Madiq in the northwestern Hama countryside. According to Syrian opposition sources, the shelling caused significant material damage.
No group has claimed responsibility for the rocket attack so far. However, Syrian pro-government activists believe that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its main ally, Jaysh al-Izza, were behind the shelling.
A day earlier, the militants shelled the Christian town of Mahardah, near al-Suqaylabiyah, with cluster rockets. Nine women and children were reportedly killed as a result of the brutal rocket attack.
Pro-government sources announced earlier that Syrian warplanes began conducting airstrikes on positions of militants in northern Hama and southern Idlib as a part of the final preparations of the SAA to launch a ground attack in the region. However, a ground attack is yet to begin.
