On April 18, an evacuation of militants from the town of Dumayr [north of Damascus] towards the northern Syrian city of Jarabulus began, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The SANA said that more than 1,500 militants and 5,000 members of their families will be evacuated under the reconciliation agreement that was reached on April 17.
Ahead of the evacuation process, the militants handed over the remaining heavy weapons in Dumayr, including five vehicles armed with 14.5 and 23mm guns, to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). On April 17, the SAA received the first batch of the heavy weapons, that included a BMP-1 armored vehicle.
While the militants were handing over the second batch of their heavy weapons, fighters of Jaysh al-Islam assassinated “Shaer Juma’a” who is a member of the negotiation committee in Dumayr, according to the Russian TV network RT. The news outlet said that the assassination had been aimed at sabotaging the reconciliation agreement in the town. However, this attempt failed as the vast majority of militants and civilians supported the agreement.
According to SANA, the SAA will be deployed in Dumayr once the evacuation process is over within a few days, if not hours. Syrian pro-government sources also said that the Russian Military Police will enter the town as a part of the reconciliation agreement.
