On August 23, the Abkhazian Network News Agency (ANNA) released photos of a decoy tank, which was made by the militants to trick Russian and Syrian warplanes.
The fake tank, which was made from wood and plastic and had printed tracks, was reportedly stationed in the vicinity of the newly-captured town of Kafr Zita in the northern Hama countryside.

Despite being carefully placed; the decoy didn’t apparently trick the Russian Aerospace Forces nor the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) as it was almost intact with no burn marks or any shrapnel holes.
Nearby the decoy, a destroyed M-46 130mm artillery piece and a pick-up truck can be seen. This further confirms that Russian and Syrian warplanes were able to identify the real targets.

ISIS used similar tricks during its final months in Iraq. However, to no avail. The use of this technique by Syrian militants reflects their desperation, and the high-efficiency of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the SyAAF.
This tricked worked well for the Russians in WW2 but times have changed obviously. Haha.
It worked for the N Koreans, Vietnamese and Serbians so far.

In all fairness, that was more then 20 years ago. Smart weaponry and targeting has gone a long way since. In 20 years we went from propeller driven aircraft in 1945 to mach 2 aircraft with stand off weapons and guided missiles. We can’t assume NATO militaries (as in the US military) is still using the same tactics and technology as it did in that war. Complacency like that is what causes nations to lose in wars. You have to assume your enemy has wizened up and is at least as smart as you are. Or you get fucked in war.

Sure, everyone has untouchable aircrafts against countries with little to no air defence systems. If the F-35 is so badass, how come Israel only conducts airstrikes from Lebanon and never seems to enter syrian air space?
One did get shot down by a Syrian S-200, but they blamed it on a bird strike.
1) Most other people here know, the Israelians has an agreement about attacking Irianians and Irianian helpers in Syria with the Russians,which dont like the Irinians as well.
2) I am sure the F35 is a very good airplane and a level better then F16 and F18. Its main problemes arei ts very expensive to the price and have had too many failures in the building proces.
Not even a dent to the Iranian military machine. These tricks do work, but must be done correctly. Like using old tanks that are not worth servicing, or making a lot of tank tracks in the ground, using metal not fabric, and heaters. etc… We remember Vietnam, and how technology won the day for USA. What about the 5500 dead Americans in Iraq, where did technology get them? Go underground is the big learning lesson and use TOW missiles. Infantry vs. Infantry in the end. Hit hard.

Well, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you throw enough money at a problem chances are you will get it fixed eventually. And they threw a LOT of money at the F-35. And its not like Iraq has much of an air defense network of its own. So its not like you need highly advanced stealth aircraft to bomb some Shia group’s ammo dump. If anything that would be serious overkill. I reckon the IDF could do so with any of its older F-15 and F-16’s without a hitch. All the more so since Jordan and Saudi Arabia wouldn’t lift a finger to stop them anyway.
True points you made, especially Russian tech has evolved into the digital world and has made leaps and bounds. But Russia also has now amazing experience in targeting Jihadists. That likely plays a role too. I guess the analysts who choose targets now have systems with algoryhtms that can help to detect decoys. With machine learning, this can be automated with ease. It would suprise me that Russia would not have those tech, now that even hobbyist can programm machine learning. A new era truly.
Yes they have analysts and algorithms, as well as softwares to do the job. Both America and Russia had those twenty years ago going full steam. Milosevic was Holbrook’s, CIA, and American player, agent if you wish. As for the technology they had 50 or more years implemented various early warnings, friend or foe, plastic-metal recognition softwares. And it is called ‘modern technology’.
Without a doubt technology and many of the tactics have changed since then, but ive seen reports from when i was in Iraq in 2006/2007 and from friends who went to afghanistan after that, that the freedomfighters printed out mortars and laid it out on the ground, then coalition forces bombed it. And they painted the ground on a tarp, and then hanged it over mortars and weapons to be missed by intel, so the basic stuff still works.

NATO was too afraid to bomb the hospitals and other civilians targets at low altitude so it worked well but the Russians with the Su-25 can tell the difference.
Thats not correct. Your socalled low altitude is replaced by much smarter bombs by mainly americans.
France and UK have them too – but very expensive.
Nothing strange in Russians and Assads can bombarde from low altitude, when the enemy below hardly can shoot back…
They had smart bombs in 1999 and still they missed most times at high altitude which is why they had to bomb one target multiple times; I am sure the tech is more accurate now but the longer a projectile has to travel the more that can go wrong. The one thing they taught me in the Air Force that was true is K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid, the Russians don’t over complicate and this works.
F16s fx has used laser guided missiles guided by hiiden troops on the ground.

Well, radar can do that trick for them. Or switch to ultramagnetic waves…no decoy against that. With simple sonar instaled submarine can tell what is made of plastic, what is rock, and what is made out of metal.

With Russia’s spy satellites in orbit there’s not a thing bigger than a motorcycle that can move anywhere in Idlib without the Russians knowing about it, so as soon as anything real and functioning moves out of hiding, either the Russians or the SAAF are straight on it bombing it to pieces.
