In September, the Russian army began large-scaled offensive operations in the southern Ugledar direction. The frontlines there have remained almost unchanged since Ukrainian counteroffensive last summer, but ambitious incursion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Russian Kursk region in the north grinded Ukrainian strategic reserves and paved the way for Russian advance.
In recent weeks, the Russian troops have rapidly advanced in different directions around the main Ukrainian stronghold, the fortress of Ugledar located on the hill in the steppes. The previous Russian attempts to launch assaults on the city were repelled. Today, Russian forces are rapidly surrounding Ugledar, grinding the Ukrainian garrison in a cauldron.
Since the beginning of autumn, the Russian army took control of important strongholds of Vodyanoe and Konstantinovka on the northeastern flank of Ugledar. To the east the road from Ugledar to Konstantinovka came under almost the full Russian control. On the western flank, Russian forces largely expanded their zone of control and took control of Prechistovka, where the road used for Ukrainian military supplies on a wide front from Novoukrainka and Bogoyavlenka was cut off.

In recent days, the Russian military largely expanded its zone of control and came close to encircle the fortress of Ugledar. Ukrainian defense around the stronghold crumbled.
Russian forces destroyed Ukrainian defense west of the city and took control of wide field areas north of the Kashlagach River, approaching the last road from the village of Bogoyavlenka to the outskirts of Ugledar. This is the last change for the Ukrainian garrison to save forces grinded in the city. Soon, they could only escape from the cauldron through fields that will be covered with mud in the coming days. When the road to Bogoyavlenka is cut, Ukrainian forces will be left without ammunition, medicines and additional manpower.
Whether the Ukrainian military command decides to fight for Ugledar or allows soldiers to retreat, the upcoming battle for the fortress will lead to heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The city of Ugledar is mainly defended by forces of the 72nd Mechanised Brigade and the 58th Separate Motorized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The flanks around the city were secured by poorly trained forces of the Ukrainian Territorial Defense. After they fled from their military positions north of the Kashlagach River, the command of the 72nd Brigade was forced to take some forces from the outskirts of the city to the western flank in an attempt to urgently reinforce the defense of the strategically important road.

As a result, Ukrainian defence on the eastern outskirts was weakened and Russian forces immediately launched assault there. Battles broke out in the eastern district of Ugledar called ”dachas”. The Russian military launched operations there earlier, during the protracted battles near Ugledar, and managed to gain a foothold in the residential area again.
On the southern outskirts, Russian forces broke through Ukrainian defense in Pavlovka. They crossed the Kashagach River in the town and gained a foothold on the northern bank. The local industrial facility came under Russian control. The assault on Ugledar from the southern outskirts is complicated by the terrain but it also threatens the road to Bogoyasvlenka used by the Ukrainian military despite heavy fire.
The outskirts of Ugledar and Ukrainian hideout in the city are pounded by Russian artillery shelling, airstrikes and drone strikes. The Ukrainian garrison attempts to fight back to slow down Russian advance.
Amid the ongoing battles on the outskirts of Ugledar, the Russian army is tightening its grip around the fortress from the north. Last Ukrainian forces are trying to retreat from the areas of the 1st and 3rd Southern Donbass mines. At the same time, the Russian military advanced on a wide front between them. As a result, the Ukrainian garrison only has a narrow corridor of up to 7 kilometers along the Bogoyavlenka road to flee from Ugledar.
The encirclement around Ugledar is rapidly shrinking and decisive actions by the Russian army on this battlefield should be expected in the coming days. It is possible that the Ukrainian command will decide to withdraw the remnants of its units in an attempt to save forces. However, given the numerous previous battles, Kiev takes little care of soldiers and leaves many to fight in unfavorable positions for as long as possible in order not to acknowledge another defeat.
