Military Overview: Week Of Russian Victories

Illustrative Image

Over the past week, Russian troops have intensified offensive operations across nearly the entire frontline, achieving important gains while inflicting heavy losses on the Ukrainian military. The most intense fighting has centered on the Krasny Liman-Chasiv Yar axis, the Pokrovsk sector, and the increasingly critical Sumy direction, where Moscow’s forces continue expanding their cross-border foothold.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, four settlements were liberated between April 5-11, including Zhuravka and Basovka in the Sumy region, Guevo in the Kursk region and Katerinovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Russian troops are expanding their bridgehead on Ukrainian territory, advancing in the Sumy region, while destroying the last Ukrainian strongholds in the Kurk region. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to hold defense in Oleshnya, retreating from their positions on the dominant heights near Gornal. Clearing operations continue around the strategically important Svyato-Nikolaevsky Monastery.

Further south, Ukrainian assaults increase their losses with no victories in the ground in the border areas in the Belgorod region.

After their victory in Katerinovka in the Krasny Liman direction, Russian forces are launching assaults on neighboring Novomikhailovka and Redkodub. Russian troops are developing offensive toward Petrovsky from Makeevka. Russian units are breaking through Ukrainian defense in the northern part of Torskoye.

The situation around Chasiv Yar remains particularly dire for Ukrainian forces, who are reportedly suffering 60-70% casualties in some brigades defending the crumbling fortress.

Russian gains on the eastern outskirts and successful mop up operations on the streets of Dzerzhinsk (Toretsk) suggest the Ukrainian military will lose control of the city for the second time soon. Heavy fighting continues in Tarasovka nearby as Russian forces seek to expand their control.

These advances come as Russian forces have recaptured all positions lost during recent Ukrainian counterattacks near Pokrovsk, demonstrating their ability to quickly regain the initiative.

In the South Donetsk direction, Russian troops are advancing towards Bogatyr, expanding control of the Bogatyr–Razliv–Constantinople road.

On the Zaporizhzhia front, Russian forces are expanding their zone of control near Shcherbaky and Malye Shcherbaky.

Precision Russian strikes across Ukraine have played a key role in shaping the battlefield. Russian Aerospace and Naval forces conducted eight coordinated missile and drone attacks over the past week, targeting military airfields in Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk, weapons workshops in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, barracks of foreign mercenary near Kramatorsk, and ammunition depots in Myrhorod and Chuhuiv. The massive strikes are degrading Ukraine’s combat capabilities as summer campaign season approaches. Notably absent were attacks on energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian losses continue mounting, with Russian estimates suggesting 10,635 servicemen killed and wounded over the past week.

As the spring mud season is likely to end in the coming weeks, the battlefield dynamics suggest Russian forces may attempt operational breakthroughs in several directions. With Ukrainian defenses showing increasing strain in artillery availability and reserve deployment, the coming weeks may prove decisive in determining the pace and scale of Russian advances across multiple fronts. The Sumy direction in particular bears watching, as Russian successes there could open new strategic possibilities for Moscow’s campaign.
