A brief overview of the recent developments in Afghanistan:
- On May 21, the convoy of Chaparhar district (Nangarhar province) governor Mohammad Seddiq Dawlatzai was attacked by a suicide bomber. The governor and his sun were wounded;
- Government forces captured Qari Shafi, also known as Hafiz Omeri, in the Shindand district of Herat province. The detainee is a Taliban military commander and member of the Taliban’s leadership commission;
- “146 civilians were killed and 430 others were wounded”in attacks “initiated by the Taliban” during the holy month of Ramadan,” the Office of National Security Council reported on May 22;
- 67 service members of the army, police and local militia switched side to the Taliban in Balkh, Baghlan, Paktika and Logar provinces, the group said.
