I don’t understand, does that map mean that SAA only holds one little patch in a sea of ISIS?
Yes.
And they have held it for many years, under siege, after thousands of attacks… The area surrounding deir ez zoir is also a sea of dead isis fighters and toyotas…
^.^
Deir Ezzor is a great story. They are surrounded and need to take care of 100k civs in city. They are attacked by ISUS about once a week, and Daesh has sacked (or be-headed?) their area commander again! SAA is resupplied by RU cargo planes dropping many pallets of food and munitions by parachute. Their reinforcements must be arriving at airfield at night. Both Syria and Russia keep up airstrikes to weaken and kill Jihadist around perimeter.
Thanks guys, to everyone who replied. I agree that the Syrian army, and the Syrian people ARE HEROES! They did not deserve any of this mess, and I would love to see them get the justice they deserve. In fact, I would like to see the consequences for third party actions in the middle east be SO SEVERE, that no country EVER even considers interfering with another sovereign nation again – militarily or politically.
In the future the siege and defense of Deir az-Zour will be written by military historians as an epic and the defenders finally recognized as true heroes of the war against Syria
It is to be remembered that it was largely agricultural along the river , but ISIS drove the farmers out. So now its just oil wells , especially to the south (right on map)|(big $) , A real shame the Russians do not take that mountain back that the USAF bombed , ending the last C/H . Then the airport could function again , and it could be reinforced .
