This map provides a general look at the military situation in the Eastern Ghouta region near Damascus on July 24, 2017. On Sunday, a truce started between the Syrian army and local militants in the area. The truce had been negotiated between the government and local militants in the Egyptian capital of Cairo and was backed up by Russia.
However, clashes continued in areas of Ayn Tarma and Jobar mostly controlled by HTS and allied units.
Jobar must be a very hard area, have the front moved at all?
I think also SAA have not too much manpower here. With all the operations in central Syria…Damascus don’t seems a priority. Also Daara (where they are in truce) is a bigger priority.
Why not the smallest city and the open areas first? (and the south pocket)
have they done any progress in jobar and ain terma? a map with a closer look and the ground gains from phase 1 would be really great.
The offensive in East Damascus is going on for quite some time now. Al Masdar News repeatedly spoke about immanent gains in the city and announced that Yobar would soon be split from the Ayn Tarma area. It is a very difficult urban terrain and the SAA seems to have suffered quite a lot of casualties there recently. Now weeks have passed and it would be helpful to get some reliable Information about the frontline and the gains that have been (or not been) made. If no relevant progress has been made so far (accordingly, rebel´s defenses in Yobar and Ayn Tarma were “about to collapse” one week ago with tunnels discovered, informants revealing valuable strategic Information, etc) I would say it has been a huge waste of valuable manpower and equipment, soldiers fighting under extremely bad conditions……….maybe it would be better to consider a stalemate for now until more reenforcements are availible, also out of Fairness for the soldiers on the ground
Its time to collapse this pocket once and for all. Truth be told, I do not understand how the terrorists are still fighting. They are completely surrounded. How are they being supplied ? Tunnels ?
that would be my guess too!
methinks they need to hit this pocket from more than just jobar/ayn tarma area…from the north, south, and east too
