Even the highly belligerent UK intelligence services have described the ‘million man Ukranian army’ as ‘a call to arms’ and ‘not a concrete reality’ – ie pure imagination. To be fair, there are almost one million Ukranians in the armed services – but the figure includes all reservists, local and regional troops, all militia, civilian police and all border guards and customs officers. Actual military, about 700,000. Capable of front line combat, about 500,000. Of those, possibly 25% have received any sort of training, or have equipment. And some, at least, of those are either’walking wounded’ or very unmotivated. Talk of one million men, trained and front-page combat ready to retake the south remains pure propaganda, another gambit to get NATO to send the weapons (or, better still, cash) to arm them. It is true that since day one Ukraine has had more troops than Russia (with shorter supply line and holding long-prepared defensive positions) and NATO has supplied Ukraine with probably more weapons of all sorts than the Russians have – but little good it has done them. Another million soldiers would just mean that the operation would last a couple of months longer, and cost a few thousand more lives. But it remains a wet dream for Zelinsky, and will be of minimal use even if fulfilled.
