Military Situation In Eastern Ukrane on January 19, 2017 (Map Update)

The situation remains shaky in eastern Ukraine where the Ukrainian Armed Forces and militias of the Donetsk and Lugansk People Republics (DPR and LPR) continue to engage each other despite the ongoing ceasefire.

On January 19, the major part of military actions were observed near the villages of Yasinovataya, Zaitsevo, the town of Gorlovka and the settlement of Spartak near the DPR capital of Donetsk. According to local sources, the Ukrainian Armed Forces shelled these DPR-controlled areas. DPR forces responded with a counter-battery fire.

According to Ukrainian media outlets, DPR units were responsible for the violation of the ceasefire regime. However, it remains unclear why only DPR-controlled areas were damaged.

Pro-DPR sources also report about fresh reinforcements that have arrived the Kiev-held area of Artemovsk (about 300 fighters, 3 battle tanks and 3 self-propelled guns ‘Gvozdika’). But most likely these were a common rotation of the force near the contact line.
