Its not idiotic. Russia is very weak and cannot defend itself or its allies. It lacks sufficient conventional forces and it is unwilling (unable?) to use its tactical nuclear forces. I don’t think there is the political will to defend the Russia State from any foreign threat, too many other conflicting goals and interests.
