what just happened in syria will happen in iran if they don’t get nooks and can happen in russia if they don’t get tough and start conscripting as if it is an existential war. meanwhile the us is now going to have their hands full trying to control the qaeda-hts-frankensteins that they’ve created and that will eventually turn on them. it’s going to be like the cia-created afghan-mujaheedin-taliban and the iraq war insurgency all over again.

all collapsing empires try to reaffirm their power by engaging in military expedition abroad. the problem is that is not the real cause of their problem, which is internal. trying to subjugate your enemies does nothing to cure the cancer that is killing you. at the end, these empire still decline and disappear (think ottoman or autro-hungary in wwi or english or french after wwii). even winning all wars and battles won’t prevent that.
syria is a battle lost, but the damage to the west has already been done on that front. the genocide in gaza is a shining example of western civilization for all the world to see and understand. and i think that the ‘winner get to write the history’ is not a valid concept at the age of the internet. the west will have to engage in ever more lies, propaganda and repression to cover previous rounds of lies, propaganda and repression.
until even its citizen, heavily propagandized as they are, understand what their systems are and how they are turning totalitarian. this is already happening with election annulations, lawfare against political candidates, making certain parties illegal or even trying just to kill problematic people. this is much more significant than syria, which is quite secondary.
