This map provides a general look at the current situation in northwestern Syria, including the Idlib demilitarized zone. Despite official claims, Turkey has not been able to force its friends in the so-called “armed opposition”, especially Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda), to withdraw heavy weapons and fighters from the demilitarized zone. So, the situation in the area remains tense with both the Syrian Army and militants appear to be engaged in constant sporadic clashes and artillery dues.
