This map provides a general look at the military situation in Syria on August 27, 2018:
- The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies are still struggling to put an end to ISIS resence in the al-Saf area in southeastern Syria;
- The situation remains tense at the contact line between the SAA and militant groups in the Idlib de-escalation zone;
- The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) continues hit and run attacks on Turkey-led forces in the Afrin region in northern Syria;
- The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are not hurrying up to launch a military operation against ISIS on in the Euphrates Valley despute multiple claims to do this soon.

Assad and his Alawite family are safe in Russian controlled Syria: Hom’s to Latakia. This area of coast from [Tartus] to Latakia is all the Russian cares about. Turkey has plenty of Alewites and that’s the alternative: Turkey to absorb Alawite Syria. Although that frustrates the Russian scheme it is a better fit. Right now it’s controlled by Russia.
Idlib, Afrin, North Aleppo north to Turkey is Turkey controlled all the way to Manbij. The battle to determine otherwise should be avoided. The cost will be enormous to all sides. It is a tinder box. Russia should and could walk it back. Let the Turks have their area of influence.
Likewise leave the Kurds alone east of Manjib or the Euphrates. Leave Israel in the Golan (they behave well there). Iran must go. Russia can confine rebuilding to Damascus.
Let the peace begin.
