A brief overview of the recent developments in Syria:
- Units of the Syrian Army are advancing in southern Idlib in the direction of Kafr Nabl;
- Turkish-led forces reentered Nayrab amid an intense fighting with the Syrian Army;
- Pro-militant sources reported that the Syrian Army had shelled Sarmin, Arinah and Kafr Nabl;
- Kurdish rebels reportedly struck Turkish positions at Burj Haydar with an ATGM;
- Turkish forces shelled Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) positions near Tell Rifaat;
- Turkish and Russian forces continue conducting joint patrols in northeastern Syria despite tensions in Idlib.

A partial withdrawal was announced in order to show the world, that Russians are able to withdraw from Syria if needed, but US do not want to withdraw even if they are there illegally. I don’t like it either but he is the President of Russia, with multiple pressure points and issues to weigh. In the end Russia clearly hopes to cash in Syria’s gains on the ground and hold Turkey in a loose alliance to combat the economic and political war being waged on Russia by the United States. If it results in a cease fire that protects the current line of control, if it really is a Turkish enforced cease fire than it would still be an enormous step forward for the Syrian state. It may not be perfect, we, including me, may not like it at all but if you come down from the emotional hysteria that all of us land on from time to time you can see how that might serve everyone’s interests, including Russia’s more broadly.
