I thought from week 1 that Kiev would be a very bad idea. I’m glad they called off that bit of urban warfare. (If it comes to it again, they could try again, but clearly with a set of tools that’s totally different from what they’ve so far used, and one that factors in high use of portable anti-tank weapons. They need to have shot spotters, decoys, drones, lots of converted APCs, urban warfare robots, etc.)
In any case, why grind when they have no advantage in neutralizing the enemy’s forces on those grounds (indeed in these urban settings it would be a distinct disadvantage). They need to reposition and during this period of movement from both sides seriously step up aerial recon and medium and higher altitude look-down patrols to find enemy concentrations and targets of opportunity.
They also need to pick off a few more SAM systems, and for that, drones and old stock cruise missile can help.
Bottom line, it’s not the acreage that counts here. It’s how defensible your positions are and whether they help with your objectives.
It has been pretty pathetic, however I think its been two stories. In the South they have been quite effective. The DPR and the LPR are good fighters. Small in number but very good with tactics etc, after 8 years should be. Their call up brought in a bunch on conscripts who were cannon fodder for lack of better term, simply not ready for a fight. The Chechen well they are actually enjoying themselves tik tok and all. They were always going to do fine. Russia’s troops from Crimea also performed well. In the North? They got hammered , They had losses but their retreat is what did them in. They announced it as part of peace talks then did it? They paid a heavy price. Agree this alone should mean all new general staff. The soldiers in the north also performed poorly in retreat, I watched a video of a column take hit after hit and they just sat there on the road waiting their turn? No evasive action , nothing only time they moved was to go around a burning apc tank etc. No air force to speak of? No idea why they took the night off and decided not to cover a retreat? Pretty piss poor performance. We will have to see what plays out in the south they Russia simply do not have the numbers for Ukraine its fjcking massive bigger than two Colorado and half a Utah…. 200k troops will not get it done. They should be able to stop any UAF movement in large numbers but I watched the UAF use trains to send armor east yesterday… If the VKS decide to enter the war they should be able to hammer UAF..maybe they cant bomb from above 4k meters? who knows. Many Ukra ground troops are organized as guerilla infantery. They are very good in crossing defence lines and fight by themself anywhere.
They are themself. They dont has to ask. They act by looking for oppertunities for any kind of destruction. They hit and are gone. They have some RPGs and harder ones with them.
By that You have a deep defence which at the same time attack and make the Russian troops exhausted.
The Russians are like one big machine under toal command all the time with smaller leaders also under command.

It seems clear to me there needs to be a totally demilitarized zone west of Donbas. This would most logically be the large north-south strip between the Dnieper and Donbas.
Since we can fully expect a group like the Azov extremists and their radical nationalist allies to mount constant hit and run provocations against Donbas over the years, from this strip, there can (or should) never be NATO-style security guarantees for this area of Ukraine—-to do so would essentially guarantee that these groups mount provocations to trigger these guarantees.
Therefore, if there are ever to be security guarantees for Ukraine, it could only be for the western part of Ukraine across the Dnieper.
