Very slow advances. The war turned into a position warfare.
The reason is that there’s 8-year dug in forces in the Donbass. There’s very little between that and Kiev.
Same with Odessa – quite a cluster of Ukrainian forces.

I wouldn’t make assumptions about the positional nature of this war. The Donbas region has been fortified heavily. It is full of forests and rugged terrain with a wide mix of valleys, hills, and mountains. The main forces of Kiev and Russia are in this area. A reminder that Kiev has the numerical advantage in this conflict, as Russia has refused to deploy significant numbers to this conflict. That said, Russia appears to be finishing a rotation of troops along its main front lines. This explains the lull in combat operations and the increase in artillery and airstrikes across the front and rear lines of Kiev’s forces. There will most likely be another push, from Lyman southward and from Popasna Northward. We could also expect a full push from the east into Severdonetsk during this time to keep the pressure on Kievs forces. Ukraine can not withdraw as doing so will result in massive losses from retreat without any gain. Kiev would rather draw out these losses and inflict damage upon advancing Russian forces. The goal here is clearly not to win the fight but to make it costly for Russia from Kievs point of view
