Both USA and RF know nuclear war is a loss for everyone. Hence a war with conventional arms provided by NATO (USA) but fought by Ukrainians is the perfect neo-con solution. Russia can be bled slowly and “safely” over time without dirtying any EU country with the horrors of war. Putin should have recognized this and followed a diplomatic path toward securing some “Ukrainian” territory and halting NATO expansion. Now he has opened this ugly can of worms to the lasting grief of tens of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian families.He has to figure out an end game that he can market as a success. To that end he has to cut a deal that is too good to be rejected by EU, but good enough to claim a victory. That is a small piece of eastern Ukraine. Pre 2/24 portions of Luhansk and Donetsk and the Crimea with Ukraine permanently neutral. Asking more will mean the war continues and strategically this is not in RF favor. It should hold the tactical advantage, although in truth that is not apparent on the ground. But it doesn’t hold the strategic advantage and in this game, which it should never have entered, it never will. The house wins in the long run, and Russia is a player, not the house.
