Exactly! Thank You! Russia is is taking control of both sides of Ukraine and coming towards the center from the left and right.It looks like controlling the sea ports-all of them is very important. Odessa will be another major win for Russia. It does take time but thats how you get it done in this situation. I did think that Russia would take the grid out in Kiev but then i thought- that would hurt hospitals-schools and all sorts of folks. i commend them for holding back.
Why bother? Why spend the time, ammo and manpower? It’s not very friendly but in terms of a war winning strategy (as opposed to a humanitarian one) any artillery shelling Donetsk is artillery that is not firing at advancing units, likewise any soldiers invested in defending and operating it are not serving a more useful purpose elsewhere along the front.
Would it be nice to give Donetsk some peace and quiet? Maybe a buffer, even? Yes. If the Russians had more soldiers to commit and an interest in pushing that section of the front maybe it would happen. However, as it is now, they’ve clearly decided that other sections of the front are more important, probably due to Ukraine having more soldiers to commit making the prevention of their transit, coordination and resupply more important than territory and giving buffers to cities that are not in active parts of the front.
But in closing, I’d offer you this: The artillery shelling Donetsk is an easy target and replacing it costs NATO money and reserve artillery of their own, even better is that every building they destroy has to be replaced with something else, Ukraine and NATO are effectively paying for part of what could be the reinvention of Donetsk as a modern city.
