On August 29, several missiles and suicided drones struck Yemen’s al-Anad Air Base where forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition are situated.
The air base, which once hosted US troops, is located in the southern province of Lahij, some 60 kilometers to the north of the city of Aden.
The pinpoint strikes targeted a unit of the Giants Brigades that was conducting a training course in al-Anad Air Base. According RT reporter in Lahij, the strikes killed 40 fighters and wounded 50 others. The death toll is expected to raise in the upcoming few hours. Some of the wounded are in a critical condition. Furthermore, many fighters are still missing.

The Giants Brigades, originally formed in the 1970s, is one of many Yemen groups fighting for the Saudi-led coalition. The group’s fighters are mostly Salafi tribesmen from Lahj and Abyan and natives of Dammaj in Saada province, who were expelled by the Houthis in early 2014.
The faction, which maintains 20,000 to 28,000 fighters, receives extensive military and financial support from the United Arab Emirates.
Yemeni sources said that the deadly attack on al-Anad Air Base was carried out by the Houthis (Ansar Allah). While this is the most possible scenario, the Yemen group is yet to claim responsibility for the attack.
The Houthis carry out missile and drone strikes on Saudi-backed forces in central and southern Yemen on a regular basis. Nevertheless, group rarely claims responsibility for these attacks.
Over the last few years, the Houthis developed their offensive capabilities with help from their allies, first and foremost Iran. The Saudi-led coalition’s tight siege and repeated strikes on Yemen failed to hider the development of the group.
