The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) is a higher education association of Christian institutions headquartered in the historic district of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. According to the CCCU website, it includes 180 Christian institutions around the world.
“With campuses across the globe, including more than 150 in the U.S. and Canada and nearly 30 more from an additional 18 countries, CCCU institutions are accredited, comprehensive colleges and universities whose missions are Christ-centered and rooted in the historic Christian faith. Most also have curricula rooted in the arts and sciences. The CCCU’s mission is to advance the cause of Christ-centered higher education and to help our institutions transform lives by faithfully relating scholarship and service to biblical truth,” it says.
All CCCU members self-identify as having a Christian identity and mission. Nonetheless, something interesting has been happening with the CCCU members. At least 3 members, Goshen College and Eastern Mennonite University and Azusa Pacific University recently removed the ban on public LGBT relationships on their campuses.
The Azusa Pacific University chaplain even publicly supported a California State Assembly resolution urging pastors and other civic leaders to affirm homosexuality and transgenderism, and condemn “conversion therapy.” The school declared that the “APU community remains unequivocally biblical in our Christian evangelical identity”, but, according to reports, it “specifically removed language that barred LGBTQ relationships as part of a standing ban on pre-marital sex” from its student handbook. And as another modern feature the Christian institution is now accepting non-Christian students.
The open pro-LGBTQ stance of a part of the CCCU members [some describe it as an attempt to gain an upper hand using the mainstream trend] caused a kind of conflict with more orthodox members of the Council. For example, the President of Cedarville University Thomas White declared that Cedarville “will not compromise on the biblical view of marriage.”
Nonetheless, it seems that his voice has fo far found little support among other ‘Christian educatin institutions’ that more and more open their doors for the modern neo-liberal consumerist trends. The question appears what would happen to those who do not follow it? Would they be declared representatives of the wrong version of “Christianity” in the nearest future? Taking into account the developments around the world, this may appear to be a logical step for those seeking to destroy the traditional meaning of religious.
