A special force of the Israeli military carried out an operation near the Syrian town of Jubata al-Khashab in the al-Quneitra countryside in the early hours of January 24, according to a recent report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Right (SOHR).
The pro-opposition monitoring group said that the Israeli unit sneaked into a residential area near Jubata al-Khashab where it attempted to kidnap a “wanted man.” However, local fighters noticed the unit and clashed with it.
“According to confirmed information, one person was killed and many others were injured,” the SOHR’s report reads.
Several local sources confirmed the SOHR’s report and said that five civilians, mainly women and children, were injured in the secret Israeli operation. The injured civilians are likely the family of the slain man, who is yet to be identified.
The Israeli military acknowledged earlier that one of its units had clashes with Syrian forces in an “isolated pocket” near the contact line. However, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is yet to comment on the incident.
Following the firefight, the Israeli Air Defense Command deployed several Iron Dome anti-rocket systems in key areas in central and northern Israel. The step indicates that Israel is preparing for an escalation.
