PODGORICA – Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Montenegro has expressed a concern about the clashes between police and demonstrators during a protest in Podgorica and urged a return to the political dialogue.

“We expect the authorities to effectively investigate all incidents in accordance with the principles of the rule of law. While demonstrations are legitimate and legal way to express political and other opinions, it should be calm and in accordance with the law,” they say in a statement.

The EU Delegation calls on all political parties to reengage in a constructive dialogue within the Parliament of Montenegro, which is the key forum for political debate.

Last night, in Podgorica, riots erupted in the protest organized by the Democratic Front (DF) in front of the Parliament. When the demonstrators tried to enter the parliament building, there was a scuffle and then clashes with the police.

Riots broke out in several parts of the city; police used tear gas and stun grenades at the demonstrators.
