Two more mysterious attacks with rockets and drones targeted military and civilian infrastructure in separate areas of Iraq overnight.
Late on June 30, two rockets struck the military section of Kirkuk International Airport in northern Iraq, slightly wounding two security personnel, AFP reported citing an Iraqi security official, who also said that a third rocket struck a house in the Uruba neighborhood,” causing material damage only.
The military sector of the airport includes bases for the Iraqi military, the federal police, and the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of Iran-aligned armed factions officially recognized by the government.
Fragments found at one of the impact sites revealed that precision-guided 122 mm rockets of an unknown type were used in the attack.
Early on July 1, some ten drones were spotted flying over the Baiji refinery in Salah Al-Din, also in northern Iraq, according to Baiji District Commissioner Adil Ahmed.
“Around 1 a.m., more than 10 unidentified drones appeared over the Baiji refinery. Security and military forces in the area responded with anti-aircraft weapons and engaged the drones,” Ahmed said, according to the Iraqi +964 news website.
The official added that the response forced the drones to withdraw without causing any damage. He didn’t provide any further details.
Last week, hours before a ceasefire ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war, drones struck radar systems at two military bases in the capital, Baghdad, and southern Iraq. The government said it launched an investigation into the drone attacks. The results are yet to be shared.
The recent attacks in Iraq appear to be similar to the ones carried out by Israel’s Mossad spy agency against Iranian air defenses during the war.
The attacks could achieve two objectives for Israel, intimidating Iran-aligned factions within the Iraqi government and facilitating future operations against Iran by weakening the country’s air defense network.
