Two separate drone and rocket attacks targeted northern Israel on November 17, with one being launched from Iraq the other from Lebanon.
In the morning, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that a suicide drone launched at Israel “from the east,” a code for Iraq, was intercepted by air defenses over southern Israel. Warning sirens had sounded in Yavne, Ness Ziona, and several other settlements.
While the IDF said that the drone was shot down, Footage posted to social media showed a cloud of smoke above an antenna farm of the Bezeq communication company near the settlement of Rehovot. No casualties were reported by Hebrew media.
The attack was likely carried out by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which launched some seven drone attacks against Israel a day earlier.
Later just before noon, the IDF said that a barrage of some 20 rockets was launched from Lebanon at the Western Galilee and the city of Haifa.
Some of the rockets were intercepted by air defenses, while the rest struck open areas, according to the military, which said that the attack didn’t cause any casualties. Video footage showing a few successful interceptions was also released.
Hezbollah later claimed responsibility, saying in a statement that it shelled the area of Krayot which is located right to the north of Haifa.
Rocket and drone attacks have been targeting Israel on a regular basis since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip in October of last year, with some of the drones launched from as far as Iraq and Yemen. The attacks increased after the IDF escalated its operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
While many of these attacks were successful, it is hard to assess how much losses they had caused due to the strict military censorship in Israel.
