UPDATE: Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility

Today, Bacha Khan University in northwestern Pakistan was under terrorist Attack that killed 20 and injured more than 50.

The attack took place on Wednesday morning as students and staffs were gathering for classes. According to local police the death toll has now risen to 21 people.

A Pakistani security official told the reporters that the final number of killed may rise as high as 40. The rescue works recovered several bodies of students, guards, police officers and a teacher, identified by the media as chemistry professor Syed Hamid Husain.

The University Vice Chancellor Fazal Raheem told earlier to the media that the university has around 3,000 students and the attack happened as the university was hosting a poetry event which was attended by around 600 guests.

Pakistani officials later confirmed to the reporters that in that attack 4 gunmen were also killed by Pakistani armed forces.

TV footages of the incident showed that the attackers climbed the walls and jumped into the compound of the university using the cover of fog and went on indiscriminately killing people. Survivors of the attack said some of the victims were shot in the head.

A senior Pakistani Taliban commander named Umar Mansoor claimed responsibility for the assault. According to that Taliban claims, four suicide attackers were carried out that gruesome attack.  He also claimed that the university was targeted because of its support for the government and the military.

On the other hand, Pakistani Taliban spokesman Muhammad Khorasani denied the organization’s involvement, indicating a possible faction inside the militant group.

The Bacha Khan University, in Charsadda, bordering with Afghanistan, is less than 40 kilometers from the Army Public School and Degree College in Peshawar- a site where one hundred forty-five people, including 132 children and the school’s principal, were killed in a Pakistan Taliban attack in December 2014. The Charsadda province has been observing regular clashes between the Pakistani Army and Pakistani Taliban militant movement.

Today, there are several reports that Bacha Khan University in northwestern Pakistan is under terrorist Attack. Already this ongoing attack has killed 10 and injured more than 50.

Reports said, the attackers are holding hostages within the campus grounds. Pakistan Army soldiers have entered the university. Vice-chancellor of Bacha Khan University, Fazal Rahim Marwat told the reporters that, administrative staff and students are in the university grounds. Five injured people have so far been evacuated from the campus, the report states, but none of the 3,000 students and 600 guests on the university campus have been injured.

A Pakistani local media source informed, “Security forces are present on site and are combating the terrorists but as yet are not sure how many terrorists are entered inside the university.”

Pakistani officials later confirmed to the reporters that in that attack 4 gunmen were also killed by Pakistani armed forces.

Nobody claims of responsibility yet for the attack.
