More than 9,200 locals from the Eastern Ghouta region have joined the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and several pro-government armed groups since the liberation of the region on April 14, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on May 30.
The SOHR said that most of the locals who joined the SAA are from the districts of Duma, Hammuriyah, Irbin, Jisreen, Kafr Batna, Hazzah, Misraba, Saqba and Madeira. The source added that a part of these locals are former fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) who had defected from their groups during or even before the SAA military operation in the Eastern Ghouta region.
The evacuation agreement between Jaysh al-Islam and Damascus gave 18-42 y.o. men there a six-month period to reconcile and join the SAA, if they have not completed their mandatory service. However, it appears that the majority of locals had joined the SAA and pro-government forces before the end of this period.
Earlier this month, the Syrian pro-opposition news outlet Damascus Voice said that more than 4,000 locals of the Eastern Ghouta region joined the SAA. This indicates that the number of locals who opted to join the SAA doubled during the last three weeks.
This drastic increase in the number of its personnel allowed the SAA to demobilize soldiers for the first time since the beginning of the Syrian war. Around 10,000 SAA soldiers will be discharged from military services on June 1, according to Syrian pro-government sources.

War operations are war operations, not vendettas, and I’m amazed how the syrians are eliminating headchppers on their occupied territories in Idlib, Daraa, Deir er Zor, etc, in clandestine or special operations, not to speak of the classic operations (this year, they have cleaned up a third of the Idlib (also parts of Aleppo, Hama, Homs) occupied territories, East Ghouta, Yarmouk, East Qaleimun, the Rastan pockett. The war is won, there will be no divided Syria, because even the YPG will go on the green buses, if they not reconcile

I never understood why people were forced to engage into the army. It’s an third world thing. It’s obvious that people who are forced to engage make poorer soldiers than those who want to join.

When you must kill thousands of soldiers to recover 5 square meter because you have no weapons, no helmet, no strategy, you let the west gathering weapons in Syria without any control because you collaborate with the west “war on terror”, you didn’t recover Golan Height because of poor allies, …… people start not willing to fight for you. And so, you are forced to engage by force.

As most other countries have as well. National Service ( conscription ) is the modern name used. Britain only ended that in the late 1950’s.
Israel today has conscription for Jews and Druze only.

There are various good reasons for mandatory service: In case of war the country can mobilise reserves faster as large parts of the population already had basic training. Also a army of conscripts is less likely to turn against the own population in case the political leadership tries to stay in power using force.
As you can see these advantages only apply to an army whose job is the defence of a country against an regular enemy force. That is why most of the countries with a conscript army have special unity of professional soldiers as well to get the best out of both worlds. And if the army is supposed to attack other, much weaker countries these advantages turn into disadvantages.

Actually, six or seven years trapped under the (foreign sponsored) Jaysh al-Islam terrorist and criminal occupation of East Ghouta, with militants engaging in regular kidnappings, looting of private and public property, holding civilian hostages, controlling and price gouging of all food and water supplies etc, is enough motivation for many of the liberated to join the ranks of SAA.
The more syrians fight to reclaim their country the more they can be said to be patriots.
