On January 17, the Russian military expanded its control along the Haichur River, all while keeping pressure on Kiev forces around the key city of Huliaipole in Zaporozhye.
Priluky on the western bank of the Haichur was captured by the Vostoke [East] Group of Forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which said in a statement that the attack on the settlement was led by the 394th Motor Rifle Regiment of the 127th Motor Rifle Division.
The ministry added that Kiev forces lost “a large number” of troops and equipment while attempting to hold onto the settlement.
“The liberation of Priluki led to the expansion of the bridgehead on the western bank of the Gaičur River and created conditions for further advancement into the Zaporizhia region,” the statement reads.
Priluky is located right north to Zhovtnevoye, also known as Olenokostiantynivka, which was captured by the Vostok Group of Forces just a day earlier. This goes to show that Russian military operations in the direction of Zaporozhye are once again accelerating.
Now, nearly all territories on both banks of the Haichur, from Huliapipole north to Bratske are under the control of the Vostok Group of Forces. This line is more than 25 kilometers long.
It’s worth noting that the Vostok Group of Forces expanded its control in recent days to the west of Huliaipole. Intense clashes are taking place in Staroukrainka and Zaliznychne. Both settlements will likely be cleared by Russian troops in a few days.
In fact, Ukrainian defenses to the west of the city are about to collapse. Many Ukrainian troops surrendered to the Vostok Group of Forces in the last few days.
A video that appeared online recently shows at least six soldiers and officers from Ukraine’s 108th Territorial Defense Brigade surrendering somewhere near Huliapipole. This particular unit has reportedly taken some heavy losses since being brought into this direction.
With the Haichur-Huliaipole line nearly fully secured, the Vostok Group of Forces will soon begin advancing to the west, towards the key city of Orikhiv, a key defense node in Zaporozhye.
Ukraine could lose the city before the end of year if no additional reinforcements are sent there, and the current tactics of its forces are not changed. Kiev appears to be incapable of fulfilling the first requirement, and unwilling to fulfill the second. The Russian military will take advantage of this.
