A 7-year old child was killed when US forces shelled his home town in northeastern Syria, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on January 9.
According to the state-run news agency, US forces shelled the town of al-Azbah in the northern Deir Ezzor countryside with mortars. One of the shells struck the victim’s house killing him right away and injuring his mother.
The SANA’s information was confirmed by opposition sources. The Euphrates Post identified the victim as Ahed Hani al-Tuqan. The news outlet revealed that the victim’s brother, Fahed, was also injured in the attack.
Local sources said the shells were fired from a US base in CONICO gas facility near al-Azbah during a live fire drill by the coalition.

The horrendous incident will likely trigger more tensions between Arab locals in northern and eastern Deir Ezzor and the US-led coalition.
US forces are occupying a number oil fields in Deir Ezzor and other parts of northeastern Syria in cooperation with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Washington claims that its forces are “guarding” these fields.
The last few months saw a series of protests against the SDF in Deir Ezzor, including in al-Azbah. Clashes were also reported on several occasions. The situation will deteriorate even more after today’s incident.
