On March 9, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) announced that it had added a multi-purpose warship and dozens of missile boats to its fleet.
The new vessels were introduced into service during a ceremony that was held at the port city of Bandar Abbas. The large ceremony was attended by IRGCN commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri.
The Shahid Mahdavi multi-purpose warship, which was converted from an Iranian-made commercial vessel, was showcased along with 99 Ashura and Tariq speed boats, which have been upgraded with new missile systems.

Speaking in the ceremony, Tangsiri said that with joining the new vessel and boats, the IRGCN will be significantly strengthened.

The commander noted that the new vessels were developed by young Iranian military experts, describing the joining of the vessels as “an important and effective step in improving the level of naval combat power” of the IRGCN.
According to Tangsiri, the Ashura and Tariq-class boats are now armed with precision-guided missiles with a range of 10 to 180 kilometers.
The commander added that the ocean-going Shaid Mahdavi can carry and operate different Iranian-made weapon systems.
“It weighs 2100 tons, 240 meters in length and 27 meters in width, that is equipped with a 3D phased array radar, surface-to-surface, surface-to-air missiles, highly advanced electronic warfare Khordad 3 integrated telecommunication systems with the capability of carrying helicopters, drones and operational boats,” said.
Tangsiri added that the new multi-purpose warship will give the IRGCN the ability to operate in long-distance missions in international waters.
The IRGCN has been working nonstop to expand its fleet as well as its area of operations, which now includes the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea. The main aim is to confront the United States and its regional allies, first and foremost Israel.
