Last night, an Armenian ballistic missile strike hit the Azerbaijani city of Ganja killing and wounding multiple civilians. According to Azerbaijani authorities, 13 civilians were killed and more than 40 others were injured in the attack.
The strike was likely delivered with the Soviet R-17 Elbrus tactical ballistic missile. For example, such missiles are in serivce with forces of the self-proclaimed Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Republic of Artsakh).
The Armenian Defense Ministry as always denied claim of Aerbaijan and in response accused the Azerbaijani military of striking populated areas inside the Nagorno-Karabakh region, including Stepanakert, the region’s biggest city. Azerbaijani, in own turn, denies that its forces shell any civilian targets also.

Historically, bombing civilians only backfires, Yemen and Afghanistan are recent examples. The Israelis bombed Lebanon and got Hezbollah in return. The images of dead women and children don’t play well anywhere. Armenia really needs a rethink of its fallacy that it can hold on to disputed occupied Azerbaijani lands.
This is a very and ominous turn of events and Armenia which is already isolated will lose even modest sympathy in the world and these images of children and women beamed around in the Muslim world will only make matters worse and definitely bring in Jihadis. There are already demonstrations in Turkey, Pakistan and even Iran has condemned it and will find it very difficult to support such atrocious war crimes. So far Azerbaijan ha shown a great degree of restraint considering the firepower its possesses, these types of indiscriminate acts by Armenia will stiffen Aliyev’s resolve as any talk of ceasefire would prove fatal to his regime that had built up expectations of a quick drone led sanitized victory. Armenia needs to withdraw from all disputed areas and let Russia and other neutral parties supervise a ceasefire, the other option will lead to the destruction of Armenia, genocide and a regional war.

As an advocate of peace I would advise Armenia not to target civilians as it will lose in the end in any case due to demographic, geographic, military and economic weakness. Killing civilians dating back to Hitler’s Blitz on London only strengthened British resolve, Vietnam proved the same. Armenia is isolated in any case and the images of dead children upset all rational people. There are already demonstrations in Karachi Pakistan and Istanbul and it will certainly bring in Jihadis.

Armenian leadership or the lack of it, seems extraordinarily inept. Just close to the US election, Russia will hardly intervene and create a wider conflict with NATO and the Islamic world. Turkey and Pakistan are the key players here and Russia has had very bad experiences with both during the USSR ill-fated era. Russia is much weaker now.
