Mysterious Explosion Hit Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham HQ In Greater Idlib. Casualties Reported

Early on May 12th, a large explosion rocked headquarters of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, near the town of al-Abzamo in western Aleppo.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a militant was killed and two others were injured as a result of the mysterious explosion.

“The militants used to work in planting and dismantling improvised explosive devices as well as old ordnance,” the London-based monitoring group said in a report.

The explosion may have been the result of a human error by HTS bomb makers, or a pinpoint strike by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.

On May 3rd, a large ammunition depot of HTS, located in the town of Kafraya in eastern Idlib, blew up. Back then, several opposition sources claimed the depot was struck by a combat drone or a loitering munition.

The SAA and its allies, mainly the Russian Aerospace Forces, have been carrying out a campaign to deplete HTS’ high-value assets in Greater Idlib for more than a year. The main aim is to deter the terrorist group and its allies, who violate the ceasefire in the region on a regular basis.
