Early on August 7, a large blast rocked the city of Jisr al-Shughur in the southwestern part of the Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
The explosion, which occured in a civilian house, killed a child and injured five other people, mostly women, according to Enab Baladi, a pro-opposition outlet. The house was wiped out by the explosion.
A source in the so-called Syrian Civil Defense, “White Helmets,” told Enab Baladi that the cause of the explosion is still unknown.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the explosion was caused by war debris and unexploded ammunition. Nevertheless, the more logical explanation is that large quantities of ammunition were stored in the house.
Last April, a similar explosion rocked the town of al-Kastan in Jisr al-Shughur countryside. Eight people were injured. Back then, opposition sources revealed that an ammunition depot hidden within a civilian building was the cause.
Jisr al-Shughur and its countryside are occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the Turkistan Islamic Party. Any ammunition depot in the region likely belong to one of these two terrorist groups.
