Early on January 21, a series of explosions rocked the town of al-Mleha which is located to the east of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
A report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the explosion emanated from an ammunition depot of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the outskirts of the town. According to the London-based monitoring group, the explosions resulted in some material losses only.
These SOHR’s claims are yet to be verified. The Syrian Ministry of Defense has not released any statement on the matter, so far.
Several key facilities of the SAA are located in the outskirts of al-Mleha. The town also hosts the main headquarters of the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces. It is possible that the explosions were the result of some incident or even an attack on one of these military facilities.
Israel struck several military facilities around Damascus in the last few months in the framework of its “war-between-wars” covert military campaign which is meant to prevent Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from manufacturing advanced weapons in Syria, or smuggling such weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon through the country.
Several mysterious explosions were reported at ammunition depots and other facilities of the SAA in recent years. In most cases, human or technical errors were behind the explosions.
