Nasrallah: Saudi Arabia Is Losing Support, Must Halt War on Yemen

Via al-Manar TV

On October 19, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah called on Saudi Arabia to make a “brave” decision and put an end to the war in Yemen and warned the Kingdom’s leadership that the international support for them was shaken by the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“The leaders of Saudi Arabia should know that the international cover for their war on Yemen has begun to collapse, especially after this incident … Today the kingdom’s image worldwide is the worst in its history,” Nasrallah said during a televised speech.

Nasrallah went on to say that Saudi Arabia had suffered from large loses on ever lever as a result of its intervention in Yemen despite that it had international support. The Lebanese leader also predicted that the Saudi leadership will witness its end soon if it continues with its “stubborn” policies.

The disappearance of Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, have led to unprecedented international pressure on Saudi Arabia and its leadership. However, Hezbollah and its allies, Iran and Syria, have chosen to not comment on the issue, according to Nasrallah.

If the war in Yemen ends, this would for sure improve Saudi Arabia image and would allow to solve the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country. However, this is unlikely any time soon. The US and the Saudi-led coalition use Yemen as a battleground in their proxy-war against Iran. Furthermore, Riyadh sees the establishment of a loyal government in Sanaa as a key point in its national security strategy.

Yes, yes and yes!!!

S Melanson

Yes is right! The Houthis have won the conflict and attacks inside of KSA is key component In their endgame strategy to bring down MbS – which is what Nassrallah is basically saying.

Val Shadowhawk

Oh yes indeed!

putinbeater

not yet. but if, this would be the first good news from that peninsula. very important is to deliver food, because millions will die due to starving within 1 year.

S Melanson

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Which is why I support the Houthi incursion into KSA as most effective way to bring KSA to the peace table and end war and blockade. The blockade is preventing most of the humanitarian aid and it needs to end.

Zionism = EVIL

US, French and UK masters are now running the war on Yemen’s civilians.

S Melanson

Yes but this will not stop the Houthi incursion into KSA which has resulted in a deteriorating security situation in the southern provinces.

There is talk of an emergency meeting of the Saudi special committee governing royal succession purportedly due to Khashoggi issue but is really a culmination of many missteps by the Crown Prince and his removal may be agreed to in order to prevent MsB doing more damage.

The Khashoggi incident is staged and is a symptom of the weakened position of MsB in my opinion, it is a useful lever to undermine MsB while avoiding sensitive topics like the fiasco in Yemen that are the true reasons.

The US/UK and France will stop bombing if continuing to do so risks KSA imploding – civil war against regime while army engaged with Houthis and losing.

Sinbad2

The FUKUS nations will openly intervene if KSA is at risk. Oil and money makes their world go around. This is rerun of the lead up to WWI, FUKUS demand a global monopoly on oil.

Zionism = EVIL

Sayyed Nasrallah is a good man who tells the truth, however, the US and Zionist masters have given the corrupt Saudi headchoppers carte blanche to commit holocaust in Yemen, like the Zionists mass murder of unarmed Gaza Palestinians.

d'Artagnan

Hezbollah is now in the strongest position since its formation and has the best HUMINT assets on the ground in the region. In the past month alone, it has perfected its GPS guided missiles that can now hit every part of Zionist occupied Palestine with a 1 meter error probability. Iran has delivered GPS components to Lebanon for making Hezbollah’s growing arsenal unguided rockets into precision-guided missiles, US and western intelligence sources told Fox News. Iran’s Fars Air Qeshm flight number QFZ-9950 departed Tehran International Airport on Tuesday. Later that day, the Boeing 747 jet touched down in Syria’s capital Damascus before continuing to Beirut. Western intelligence sources said the GPS devices were sent to manufacture precision-guided weapons in Iranian factories in Lebanon, similar to those Iran operates in Syria and Yemen. Iran is also integrating Hezbollah air defence systems with Syria. The newly upgraded Russian S-300 are on similar frequencies and codes as the Iranian ones and have an improved range of upto 190 kms making all of occupied Palestine a target rich environment.

Val Shadowhawk

You nailed it with that info! Bullseye!

S Melanson

If Western intelligence was aware of the shipment then I assume Israeli intelligence would be aware as well. And it seems the slow lumbering target in the sky that is the 747 made it to its destination without incident.

Now what could possibly explain the lack of any Israeli response? Let me see… ah, Shoigu said he was closing off Syrian air space and surroundings as well (I.e. Lebanon). Well it seems Shoigu was good to his word since Israel would absolutely have taken out the 747 unless in their assessment, it is truly CLOSED!

Sorry NetanYahoo, Christmas is cancelled for the foreseeable future, no free presents for you…

Val Shadowhawk

I see it that way too. The tide has definitely shifted.

Bob

The Iranians also troll Israeli intelligence with simple old school deception – they are well aware US satellites provide Israel with systematic data on activities at Tehran airport and tarmac loaded contents of outbound flights. Iran sends large crates on flights – and unload them at Damascus airport and shuttle them to nearby depots within the airport complex – some crates are full, some crates are empty – likewise the depots. Who knows how many US taxpayers financed air to surface missiles and JDAM’s have struck such deception decoys?

S Melanson

Well the US taxpayers should thank the Russians for putting an end to such wastefulness. No more strikes on Syria and so far so good.

George King

The date was missing in your comment, it was 19/10/18 Iran providing Hezbollah with GPS-equipped weapons. American and western intelligence sources say Iran has been increasing its shipments of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah. NWOD

Interesting, not clear to me stropping the war in Yemen would increase Saudi’s standing in anyone relevant’s eyes. Might even hurt it. The Empire is fully in support not only of the war but of the food/medicine blockade, which seems to violate the Geneva Conventions (targeting civilians) and constitute a war crimes and/or crimes against humanity (genocide).

S Melanson

Support is not what it used to be as elite support is quickly evaporating and opposition to continuing the conflict is gaining the upper hand. Saudi standing is so low it can only go up.

NWOD

Well the irony is that support is evaporating over this POS Khashoggi, who no doubt deserves the death penalty for war crimes himself. He was a great champion of the Yemen war, he advocated for ISIS to behead captured Syrian soldiers (publicly), and more. His departure from Earth is an improvement.

The Yemen war is one of the real reasons to hate the Saudi regime, but that’s not in fact why they are getting push-back.

My hypothesis is Khashoggi was a CIA asset who was working to undermine MBS (for an unknown reason) b/c CIA already wanted him out. Killing their agent just made them so much more mad. The tentative approach is b/c they want the Saudis to “clean house: without damaging the relationship. They want the Yemen war to continue.

S Melanson

You are correct, Khashoggi is staged to take down MsB without having to touch upon sensitive topics like Yemen which are the true reasons they want his downfall. A committee with authority to remove MbS from line of succession is in secret meetings – cannot imagine what that is about ;)

NWOD

Who wants to stop the war in Yemen? AFAICT US is still providing support (re-fueling, intelligence, blockade). If they really opposed the Yemeni war why make it a secret? I don’t follow …

S Melanson

I have posted about elite not all one big happy family. Elites can be divided on issues and this will be revealed in debates in the media playing out as elites express view points in opposition to a planned course of action – op-ed peices in newspapers along with opinion articles for example.

In the case of Yemen, the Coalition intervention had general support among elites and not much opposition which is why the media largely ignored the war as if it did not exist along with the humanitarian crisis which if reported was downplayed and a one off article. Elite opinion is important as they have the resources to make their views known so if enough elites change their mind to oppose what they had initially supported, this will be reflected in the media – more coverage of the issue and the narrative splits to include voices of opposition. This change is quite evident regarding Yemen.

There is increasing coverage of the conflict in Yemen and the humanitarian crisis which are then linked – the United Nations produced recently a report that put blame on the coalition’s conduct of the war as causing most of the child deaths. If elites were uniform in their support for continuing the war, such a report would never have happened in the first place let alone be widely reported in the press. This increasing negative coverage of the conflict is a clear signal of growing elite opposition.

So the war may continue for now, but if elite opposition continues to grow, the opposition will eventually prevail. The Khashoggi affair suggests that elite division over Yemen is polarizing which leads to escalation until resolved – this can get quite serious if opposing elite groups both dig in. However, I see the opponents of the war prevailing and the war will end in some manner in near future and the bombing will stop… for now.

NWOD

OK, I’m still not convinced, but we’ll see. The two driving forces behind this are Israel and Saudi Arabia, even if Saudis are backing down, Israel it still pushing its humble servant the Orangutan to commit crimes for its benefit.

UN has always criticized US wars in one way or another, it is nothing new and it hasn’t stopped any wars. The big difference in Yemen is that Israel’s proxy forces, the Saudis, are so weak and incompetent, despite their overwhelming military superiority (which they gained not through their own work or intelligence, but through the oil that God put on their land), they cannot defeat the humble, dirt-poor Houthis.

S Melanson

How the situation in Yemen will develop in future cannot be predicted with certainty and you make some good points. I lean to war ending but you may prove right.

NWOD

Well I certainly hope you are right! Unfortunately I am pretty much against all the wars but the last 20 years have not generated a lot of optimism. Cheers.

Sinbad2

Targeting food and medicine is indicative of American involvement.

The US always targets children, as a way of putting pressure on the victim country.

https://youtu.be/omnskeu-puE

NWOD

Yes, lots of countries have/do use food as a weapon. Fairly indiscriminate. Should definitely be a war crime, IMO is a war crime. I think in Iraq it was more a medicine issue than food though, but the impact (and crime) is the same.

Sinbad2

Would you care to name a country that has starved another country since WWII?

Ricky Miller

He is here to hide America’s crimes. Like last summers breastfeeding resolution at the UN. Only one country prioritized corporate profits over the needs of mothers and children, and that country was the USA. See, big formula and their bankers are mostly Americana. And they love to print out coupons for new mothers to get formula. The problem is that Mother’s milk begins to dry up quickly if not utilized. But by then Mommy, no matter how poor she is around the world, can look forward to paying full formula price during her babies infancy. A UN resolution, sponsored by Ecuador was meant to address this by educating women about healthy breastfeeding. Who objected? You know whom. Who threatened Ecuador with aid withholding, etc until Ecuador withdrew the resolution? The Trump led USA, of course. You see for Americanized leadership both Corporate profits and companies market health is more important than Mothers and children. Who stepped up, defying USA threats and sponsored the resolution? The Russian Federation. These are the kinds of details NWOD and others like him hope to hide behind meaningless accusations like lots of countries use food as a weapon. No, most don’t.

Sinbad2

Yes I noticed the breast milk scandal. They will happily risk American children’s lives, for the corporations. The USA is a threat to mankind, not just Russia or China, but every living thing on the planet.

NWOD

Actually, Ricky Liar, it is you who is out to hide and suppress Russian crimes, including the deliberate targeting of civilians.

Since you lie so much, I cannot respond to all your lies, but I thought I would respond to one point. The US objection to the UN resolution was based on the marketing restrictions, par. in Article 5 of the Int’l Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/code_english.pdf Those restrictions go far beyond just banning free samples. As to your claim that women “dry up quickly”, that’s utter nonsense. It takes at least one week, most likely 2 weeks, and many women continue to lactate years after stopping breastfeeding. Do some research – oh, well, not likely, as you love lying even more than you love supporting Russian war crimes.

Ricky Miller

You, like the U.S. can easily and with no moral qualms side with the marketing needs of companies over the health and nutrition of babies. Really, no need to say anything more.

NWOD

I’m not siding with anybody. Certainly not Nestle. I’m just pointing out what actually was the basis of the objection. I just like pointing out your lies. And you see, you lied again, accusing me of siding with “marketing needs of companies”, when I did no such thing whatsoever. It’s almost too easy though, every sentence is a lie or exaggeration or some silly generalization. You are, frankly, a habitual liar, aside from being a proud supporter of Russian war crimes.

Ricky Miller

No , you came back just for arguments sake to loophole and explain away the U.S. threatening other countries for even sponsoring a resolution addressing business practices that leave millions of poor women with reduced breastmilk flow and underweight infants and needing an expensive formula that they no longer have coupons for in order to provide for their children. Investors and bankers win and the poor lose. You came to argue the other side and I find your argument reinforcement of my perception that America uses food as a weapon in order to dominate and utilize people. You are an atrocious ugly American whatever the motive and thread of your argument.

NWOD

No, you are so rabidly anti-American you continually post lies, wanton exaggerations and gross generalizations. I have often opposed Nestle’s marketing practices on formula, as well as them putting processed sugar in baby food, and many other things. I would write such things but in general you are immune from truth, you just like to attack, like a junk yard dog, you are so angry, you would bite off your nose to spite your face. And it makes you an obnoxious troll. I didn’t argue any side, I just explained precisely why US vetoed the resolution, as you made a very inaccurate claim, as you like to do b/c, as noted, you are a rabid anti-American who is a habitual liar.

Ricky Miller

No, the U.S. didn’t just veto a resolution they threatened anyone daring to offer it. And whatever the reasons and excuses the position taken was scummy and about power and privilege. And you are proof that SouthFront needs a paywall for comments and a method to exclude lying war pig trolls like you from commenting for thirty days when they harrass and hound away in comments at a website associated with Russia’s point of view Internationally. I would be a troll if we were on a glory to America site but we’re not. And Russia hasn’t committed war crimes in Syria you fiend.

Ricky Miller

And I don’t give a shit about what you’ve posted elsewhere or what you claim your positions are. That is a common information war tactic: “…hey, I have plenty of black friends.” Here on SF all you’ve done is badmouth Russia, make some small claims dislike of American policy to help with your cyber cred, then you go back to foul mouthing Russia for standing up to the United States. You are contemptible

NWOD

You’re boring, obnoxious, stupid and a war criminal.

Ricky Miller

You are a troll and an information warfare agent for American globalism

Ricky Miller

You are an American apologist psycho and your true purpose is to ruin this comments board with endless babble about Russian war crimes. You come to punish those of us here who are friendly to Russia’s point of view while we help pay for the site and that’s just wrong.

NWOD

You’re an intolerant, low-IQ, angry, Communist or Fascist, I don’t know, habitual liar, troll, and war criminal. Just block me and then you won’t be so profoundly offended by someone who isn’t as dumb, intolerant, one-sided and angry as you.

Ricky Miller

I am intolerant of American neo-Imperialism that is true. And I care little for your opinion of me seeing how you think and actually state that Russian aerospace pilots who bombed ISIS vehicles are war criminals. I’ll be along whenever you post here to clue people in that you are an instrument of American soft power information warfare trying to move the conversation from American crimes and militarism to anything along the lines of:Russia bad…

NWOD

Again, you are a total, incorrigible, stubborn, low-intelligence liar, fool and bully. I laugh at pathetic you.

Ricky Miller

Yep. But, go. Go, Russia go go go. You are pissed and crazed because Russia stops your war addicted government from getting away with whatever they want.

NWOD

I don’t have a big problem with Russia. I tend to like Putin more than most leaders. But unlike you I’m not a blind partisan. I see nuance and I am not consumed by raging hatred that blinds me to reality. You should really see a shrink.

Ricky Miller

A lie. You pretend to have that position then slam Russia each chance you get. It’s a bait and switch to help with your soft power cred. Really, you accused Russuan pilots of being war criminals for fighting ISIS. Nuff said

NWOD

Your lying is non-stop, endless, you are more boring than watching sand shift in the Sahara on a calm day. You are a habitual lying fraud, a loser, a bully (or at least you try to be but you suck as bad as that as yo do at lying, hating and deceiving, your three other “skills”).

NWOD

Oh, if you want a very intolerant website that is 100% Russian supremacist, even Stalinist, I suggest Fort Russ or Russia Insider. They don’t like anyone straying from their extremely narrow ideological corridor, you’d love it there.

Ricky Miller

You are obsessed with intruding and pushing your American narrative on sites created to challenge the MSM and see things from the point of view of others. That’s why SouthFront needs a paywall for comments and a way to flush American war pig trolls like yourself from our comments. If I need to know your opinion I’ll just turn to the TV here in America. Jackass.

NWOD

I doubt you know how to turn on a TV. Loser.

Ricky Miller

Mooch. You come here to troll but I’m sure you don’t help at all with SF’s budget.

Ricky Miller

You don’t know what you’re talking about. I have a five year old daughter and she was low percentile weight. We began formula to help her gain weight and within two weeks my wife could hardly move enough breastmilk to go back and just use the formula as a supplement. Good thing we could afford the formula. For millions of poor women around the world that situation means trouble because they don’t have the money to buy the formula for months. Treating babies as cash cows and defending the practice based on Marketing compacts is disgusting. You just refuse to admit that Russia did a noble thing and that the USA sided with big money over the needs of vulnerable children.

NWOD

Do you even know what an absolute moron you are? I wrote it takes at least one week, most likely 2 weeks, to stop lactating. To which you respond, I am ignorant, b/c your wife after 2 weeks was almost dried up, but not yet. I couldn’t make this stuff up!

Do you realize how stupid you are? And if you had a brain you would have gotten a breast pump for your wife to use during those 2 weeks, and in any case used the formula to supplement rather than replace formula during those 2 weeks. But some women never produce enough milk, that’s why US opposed the resolution, as it banned all advertising, even accurate, correct, truthful advertising that recommended breast milk first.

Anyway just block me and you’ll be happier. And me too. Hint: you’re not going to bully me away from here, so if it upsets you that I am not your sounding board, block me.

Ricky Miller

Going to be here responding to your bullshit, Russophobe and war pig. Fuck off

Ricky Miller

New World Order Dunce?

Ricky Miller

I dare you to show us your Voice of America contract. Come on take a pic.

Ricky Miller

New World Order Drag Queen? I’m stupid about some things, like voting for Trump. But I’m just smart enough to see you for what you are: a Russophobe and an American present on Alt Sites with the mission to bad mouth Russia and try to subtly influence SF contributors to give American war crimes a pass and blame Russia whenever she moves to counter American bullying.

Ricky Miller

Otherwise known as MSM. But brought here to SF.

Ricky Miller

No, New World Order Drag?

NWOD

Not sure about entire countries. Aleppo and other rebel-held areas in Syria (by Syria and Russia), Houthi-controlled Yemen (by US and Saudi Arabia), Gaza (by Israel) all come to mind.

Yes, Ricky Miller, Syria and Russia are angels and provided enough food for anyone (I can predict your lies before you make them).

Sinbad2

The terrorists in Aleppo were supplied by the USA through Turkey.

NWOD

Terrorists, smerrorists. Where is your evidence USA supplied them? Anyway the fact that they were supplied by Turkey does not negate the fact that Syria/Russia denied them food, etc.

And since you asked, Russia also deprived some Chechyan villages (you know, it’s own people) of food after WW II. Read about it at https://www.hrw.org/news/2000/04/04/russian-forces-blockade-and-brutalize-chechen-village

Ricky Miller

SouthFront, help please. He is disrupting the comments. Can you institute a paywall for comments, please. And let the community flush comments designed to push information warfare flowing from the same people who forced RT to register as a foreign agent

Ricky Miller

No. Lot’s of countries don’t use food as a weapon, that’s your ploy to hide American crimes behind a blanket accusation. Only one country is threatening sanctions on companies helping to rebuild Syria. Only the USA, Saudi Arabia, the UK and both France and the U.A.E. are conspiring to starve Yemen into submission. Only one country is engaged in open Bioweapons research including causing widespread crop failures using pathogens and gene alterations borne by insects. That country is the USA and the research program is called “Insect Allies.” One can read all about the concerns of scientists regarding the American bioweapons program in this month’s edition of the Journal SCIENCE. And this poster, NWOD, is an American funded information disruptor who claimed several days ago in a debate here on SF that Russian pilots, operating in Syria and targeting ISIS pilfered oil trucks were and are war criminals. Just FYI who you’re upvoting.

NWOD

Oh, you’re such a boring one-trick pony. Yes, yes, “America bad, Russia fantastic”, like a good little war criminal cheerleader. Yawn.

Ricky Miller

I support Russia’s foreign policy which is helping Syria resist illegal regime change. If that in your book makes me a war criminal cheerleader that says way more about you than it does about me. I reject your conclusion and remind you that it is the U.S. and not Russia who is droning civilians to death and who is invading, regime changing and assaulting countries who average 1/20 the size of America, 1/15 her population and 1/12 economic parity power. You know what they say about people and those glass houses. But please, be among the first to go to Russia and serve criminal arrest warrants to Russian servicemen. You’ll be lucky if you make it to your Russian prison cell without having your jaw wired shut.

NWOD

Yawn. Like a broken record. But I can assure you your little punk threats make me laugh. You on the other hand are welcome to come out of your momma’s basement and serve arrest warrants on the US military and also you should go to Idlib and serve some arrest warrants on those “terrorists” you ramble on about. Maybe they will make a nice video of their reaction and post it on Twitter.

Ricky Miller

We’ll get to American war crimes trials by voting third party candidates. And you do know which side of the information war this webpage operates on, do you not? You don’t care, you’re here to flame and carry out your tasking. But to me, you’re just ridiculous, as in worthy of ridicule.

NWOD

OK, let’s make a pact, you stop trolling me and I’ll stop responding to your trolls.

Even better if you could once in a blue moon write something interesting or insightful, instead of cut-and-pasting the same old boring stuff like you do.

Ricky Miller

Fuck you.

NWOD

LOL! You made my day, rolling laughing! Free comedy from the lying war criminal!

Ricky Miller

You are a piece of American propaganda shit and are here to change the narrative from understanding Russia’s point of view and commenting on it to listening to you rant about Russian war crimes in a world where America has released unending and immoral violence

NWOD

LOL! More cut-and-paste! You a funny guy! So much lieing, hating, bullying, repeating. How do you not get tired of yourself? lol.

Ricky Miller

New World Order Deputy?

Ricky Miller

You refuse to discuss all the American violations of the UN Charter. You hate me because I refuse to allow your neocon talking points pass without pushback

Ricky Miller

Piece of shit, war pig trash. Go to American glorify sites and stop hounding me

NWOD

Both times we met it is you hounding me. Lying again. Par for the course as you are a habitual liar, fraud, hater, intolerant bully.

Ricky Miller

I”m intolerant of the Russia hating nonsense you’re trying to normalize here. It’s part of your job

NWOD

Trolling, lieing, hating, bullying, distorting, deceiving – you have so many talents! Your parents must be proud!

Ricky Miller

New World Order Dick. Got your username now

NWOD

Wow, you’re so clever! More pride for your momma! Go upstairs and brag to her about your great accomplishment!

Ricky Miller

New World Order Diva.

Ricky Miller

No. You are here to spread American disinformation and are persistent about it. That suggests you are part of an organized effort and SF is your assignment. We are not Russophobes here and yoy mean to do something about that. Something Uncle Sammy…like saying over a dozen times that Russian pilots are war criminals.

Ricky Miller

New World Order Dumbass. Now that fits. For anyone saying over and over that honorable Russian Aerospace pilots are war criminals for bombing ISIS and that I’m evil for not labeling them as such.

Ricky Miller

And hey, while you were mining more of that tired vein of hypocrisy did you manage to see all the crazy good news that landed on Russia’s karma over the past day or so? Ukraine has to agree to a huge consumer gas rate hike in order to receive IMF funds. Ouch. And no more Mr. Russian nice guy. Russia has been shipping refined fuels to Belarus in volumes way exceeding Belarus’ internal consumer needs and Belarus has been selling said oversupply to Ukraine marked down from standard market price by a third. No longer. Fuel oil, gasoline, diesel in Ukraine will now have to be bought at market prices which means fuel bills beyond 25% higher. Ouch. It sucks to be a Slavic backstabbing outpost of the Empire, especially with Ukrainian Presidential elections due in about Saint Patrick’s Day. But big news: Indonesia has said it will trade for eleven Su35 from Russia even if the United States imposes sanctions. Ouch. And finally, the most fun. Secretary of Defense Mattis had a conversation with Defense Minister Sergei Shogui today in Singapore where he expressed American condolences for the Kerch college massacre. Wow, and Ouch Poroshenko. In a de facto way even a neocon Pentagon has to admit that Crimea is a part of Russia. Bigly win.

Baby food & formula producing plant bombed under the guise of being a chemical weapons plant which it was not.

Reader asks about US bombing of baby milk plant during Gulf war 4 September 1998 Greetings,

In your editorial, “What are the real reasons for the US missile strikes?” you assert that the alleged biological weapons plant bombed by America was, in actuality, the “baby milk plant” Iraq said it was.

I am curious, when you report that ” … postwar investigations confirmed that the factory had no military purpose,” what reports would you be referring to?

I like to give editorial writers the benefit of the doubt, but this information clearly should have been part of the editorial, since the credibility of the investigators weighs heavily upon one’s ability to accept your assertion that the investigations’ findings were truthful or accurate.

Many thanks, SH

Dear SH,

There are three sources for our reference to the US bombing of the baby milk factory in Iraq and the investigations which confirmed that the factory had no military purpose. The first two are newspaper accounts published after the first three weeks of the US bombing campaign.

The French daily newspaper Liberation, in its issue of February 2, 1991, interviewed Michel Wery, director of Pierre Guerin, the company which built the plant. He said that the plant had actually produced infant formula and baby food. “It would have been impossible to transform this into the making of chemical products,” he said. The French company began building the plant in 1977 and it began producing milk products in 1979, and then was closed during the Iran-Iraq War, when French technicians left Iraq.

After the end of the Iran-Iraq War, technicians from New Zealand installed new equipment in the plant in the spring of 1990 to make cheese, while French technicians were restarting the baby milk production line. Two of the New Zealand technicians, Malcolm Seamark and Kevin Lowe, were interviewed by the Washington Post in an article published February 8, 1991, confirming that the plant had been a civilian facility with no military value. “There was no way you could make chemical warfare with the plant I saw,” Lowe said.

The last reference is from a symposium in Southfield, Michigan on the impact of the Gulf war on children, held April 27, 1992, and reported in the May 8, 1992 issue of the Bulletin newspaper, forerunner of the WSWS. The speaker was Chris George, assistant director of Save the Children, the well-known charity, and he cited the destruction of the baby milk factory as one cause of the shortage of infant formula in Iraq which had driven the price of a single can up to $80. He also made reference to a UNICEF report on Iraqi mothers and children, issued just prior to his speech, which noted that the monthly government ration of infant formula was sufficient for only two days.

We should also note, in a negative confirmation of our account, that none of the multitude of postwar US and UN reports on alleged Iraqi efforts to produce biological weapons ever cited the example of the baby milk factory. You can be sure that if the reverse was the case, and credible evidence of weapons production had been found at the bombed factory, the American media would have trumpeted this fact.

Thank you for your inquiry,

Martin McLaughlin WSWS editorial board
