On March 22, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah said that the group will not comment on a recent bombing in northern Israel.
The bombing took place on the Route 65 highway at the Megiddo Junction on March 13. 21-year-old Shareef ad-Din, an Israeli citizen from the Arab village of Salem, was seriously wounded in the attack.
The Israeli military and security forces said that the attack was carried out by a man who infiltrated Israel from Lebanon. Israeli security and police officers opened fire at the suspect, killing him just a few hours after the attack. Hezbollah was named as the prime suspect.
Speaking at a ceremony that was organized to commemorate Hezbollah’s late senior official Hajj Hussein Al-Shami, Nasrallah said that the attack “confused” Israel, and that “our silence is part of the battle with the enemy.”
Nasrallah went on to stress that any attack by Israel against any person or region in Lebanon will be met with a response by Hezbollah.
“The resistance in Lebanon is on its promise and its decision that any attack against any person present on Lebanese territory, whether he is Lebanese, Palestinian or of another nationality, or any attack on a Lebanese region, will be met with a quick and decisive response,” the Lebanese leader said.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has already threatened to hit “whoever is responsible” for the Megiddo Junction bombing.
Nasrallah’s remarks are clearly meant to add to the Israeli confusion over the attack. Tel Aviv is yet to make an official accusation. A decision to direct the blame against Hezbollah could possibly lead to a serious military confrontation with Lebanon.
