On February 16, the Russian military advanced along the border in Sumy, all while repelling more counterattacks by Kiev forces far away in Zaporizhzhia.

In Sumy, the Sever [North] Group of Forces captured Pokrovka along the border from Kiev forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which noted in a brief statement that the final assault on the settlement was led by the group’s 34th Motorized Rifle Brigade.

“Artillery wiped out enemy positions, and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) teams operated all day long: reconnaissance, fire adjustment and strikes. The targets were hit without a miss,” the ministry said.

“The ground-attackers skillfully used weather conditions: warming, humidity, fog. The enemy drones blinded. Natural camouflage operated effectively: our infantry units moved forward and destroyed the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) positions,” it added.

Pokrovka is located just a few kilometers to the east of Krasnopillia, which lies right on a key road leading north to Sumy center.

In addition to capturing the settlement, the Vostok Group of Forces expanded its control south, mainly along the border, securing 11,2 square kilometers.

The Sever Group of Forces also made gains to the north of Sumy center, advancing from Oleksiivka towards Malaya Korchakovka. Russian troops captured around 3,1 square kilometers from Kiev forces in the area, moving one small step closer to Sumy.

As the Sever Group of Forces was advancing Sumy, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces repelled more counterattacks by Kiev forces far away in Zaporizhzhia.

At least five counterattacks were repelled by the group: one by the 225th Separate Assault Regiment near Rizdvyanka, two by the 95th Rifle Division and the 5th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade in the direction of Hai, one by the 92nd Assault Brigade near Bratske, and another by the 33rd Assault Regiment close to Boikovo.

Kiev forces lost three armored personnel carrier, three armored combat vehicles and several dozen troops while attempting to advance in these areas.

Recent developments shows that despite facing pressure in Zaporizhzhia, the Russian military is still capable of advancing in other directions, in this case in Sumy.

Military operations by both sides can be directly linked to ongoing peace talks. Ukraine is likely desperate to push the Russian military back in Zaporizhzhia because Moscow will not agree to any withdrawal from the region. Meanwhile, the advance in Sumy is likely meant to pressure Kiev into a withdrawal from Donetsk.
