Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed “regret” in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the incident with Russian IL-20 plane off Syrian coast. Netanyahu blamed Syria for the incident adding that Moscow and Tel Aviv should continue coordinating their efforts.
The Israeli prime minister also promised to send the air force chief to Moscow with the results of the Israeli investigation of the IL-20 shotdown.
Previously, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released own statement commenting on the situation. The IDF expressed sorrow “for the death of the aircrew members of the Russian plane” and accused Syria, Iran and Hezbollah of the incident.
All these actions came after the Russian side officialy stated that Israel bears full responsibility for the IL-20 shotdown and emphasized that Russia keeps “the right to respond”.
“We have informed today our Israeli colleagues, and I have also informed personally the Israeli Defense Minister [Avigdor Lieberman], that such actions will not be left unanswered by us,” Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stated.

I think the main reason why states around the world are just so reluctant to go up against Israel is two fold. On the one side you have the US who will at any cost to it’s own reputation, defend Israel diplomatically, economically and militarily. So going against it through either economic channels or political channels will often lead to just condemnation without any real (on the ground) action being taken against Israel. As the famous saying goes “talk is cheap”.
But on the other hand there is the Israeli nuclear stock-pile. This is what I personally believe scares most modern states around the world, even Russia. Israeli aircraft shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a plane like that. Especially when they’re drawing fire on themselves. The Russians are fighting the war on the cheap to conserve resources. That involves compromises and increased risk. A more robust posture requires increased expenditures. The Russians and their allies are winning the war, that’s the priority.

The plane that went down was a big electronic war platform. So using it as a screen to attack from behind it may have been a factor. So as to impair the missiles coming at the attacking IAF planes.
The entire S series of missiles have interchangeable components and up grades to an extent. If they weren’t hiding behind the Il-20 to attack from, and were out in the open instead. The IAF planes may have been more vulnerable.

Those Russian surveillance planes can have interceptors flying with them to warn off hostile aircraft. And if the hostile aircraft start an unprovoked firefight with a third party jeopardizing the surveillance plane, they can be taken down.

This day in 1918 Viktor Vasilevich Talalikhin was born. He served in the air defense of Moscow during World War II with an aviation regiment of the Soviet Air Defence Forces. He became one of the first Soviet aviation heroes of the war after ramming a German bomber at night with his Polikarpov I-16, but was shot down and killed in late October while flying a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3. Talalikhin claimed three victories during the Winter War and four in the air defense of Moscow.
On 30 August 1948, Talalikhin was permanently added to the muster list of the 1st Squadron of the 177th Fighter Aviation Regiment. Monuments tohim were built in Moscow and Podolsk, and an obelisk was placed at the 43rd kilometer of the Warsaw Highway, over which the ramming took place

Shoigu and the Russian military staff want to retaliate..they know that Netanyahu words are fake..as Israel knew that a Russian plane was flying towards latakia….and then they launched the airstrike to avoid be shot down thinking that SAD would not launch missile….also military staff says that Israel by military channels gave the information one minute before the airstrike when Il 20 couldnt turn to fly over safe zones…..and above all Russian military staff know that USA and NATO are now testing the Russian respond to measure the strenght or weakness of the Russian armed forces!
