Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued warnings to both Turkey and Iran from Jerusalem on December 22, following a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, in a move that highlights Israel’s regional ambition in the wake of the war in the Gaza Strip.
In a direct hint to Turkey and its neo-Ottoman ambitions, Netanyahu said that “those who fantasize they can reestablish their empires and their dominion over our lands” should “forget it.”
“It is true that all of our countries were conquered in the past by a succession of empires,” Netanyahu said.
“But through courage and sacrifice, we achieved our independence in modern times,” the primer continued. “To those who fantasize they can reestablish their empires and their dominion over our lands, I say: Forget it. It’s not going to happen. Don’t even think about it.”
“We are committed and able to defend ourselves and our cooperation further enhances that capability,” he added.
Relations between Israel and Turkey collapsed amid the war in Gaza, and tensions between the two sides grew following the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad in Syria, which put the country in the hands of Islamists backed by Ankara.
The meeting in Jerusalem came after reports revealed that Israel, Greece, and Cyprus are working on a fast response force with 2,500 troops in addition to dedicated air and sea capabilities to counter Turkey’s influence in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, which expanded into Syria over the past year.
Netanyahu, Mitsotakis and Christodoulides signed a joint declaration after their meeting, in which they agreed to “reinforce our ongoing trilateral cooperation on security, defense and military matters.”
The declaration also stressed “the importance of maritime security and pledged to deepen collaboration in safeguarding sea lanes and critical infrastructure against emerging threats.”
Of course, Netanyahu didn’t miss the chance to send a new threat from Jerusalem to Iran, especially after the recent escalation.
He said that Israel is aware that Iran has been conducting “exercises” recently, referring to a series of missile drills, adding that the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities will be discussed with United States President Donald Trump during a scheduled end of the year meeting.
“We are following this and doing all the necessary preparations,” Netanyahu said.
“I want to convey this clearly to Iran: Any action against Israel will be met with a very severe response,” he added.
Recent reports revealed that Netanyahu will present plans for a possible fresh attack on Iran to Trump during the upcoming meeting, centered around destroying the Islamic Republic’s missile program. The reports also said that Israel warned the U.S. that ongoing drills in Iran could be a cover for staging an attack.
Netanyahu’s threat shows that the 12-day June war, which was directly backed by the U.S., has significantly emboldened Israel.
Israel has been always the key power in the Middle East, but while it before relied only on its strategic alliance with the U.S. to maintain its influence, it now appears to planning to formulate its own alliances in the region and move from its decades long conflicts with the Arab world, towards a more direct conflict with Iran and a new conflict with Turkey.
Despite facing the same challenge, Turkey and Iran, which has been competing over influence in the Middle East, will not likely coordinate together against Israel.
