The Netherlands will supply Ukraine with a MIM-104 Patriot air defense battery, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced on January 17.
This is the third Patriot battery promised to Kiev by its allies. Both the United States and Germany have already pledged to provide one battery each in recent weeks as a part of a plan meant to boost Ukrainian air defense capabilities in the face of Russia.
“Very important news came from Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte today,” he said in a video address, posted on his Telegram channel late on Tuesday. “One more Patriot battery will be provided to Ukraine.”
“Therefore, we are already having three guaranteed batteries at our disposal. But this is just the beginning. We are working on new solutions to enhance our air defenses,” the Ukrainian president added.
Earlier, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte said that his country would join the U.S.-led project to arm Ukraine with the Patriot system.
Ukraine’s Patriot batteries will likely be armed with a mix of PAC-3 hit-to-kill active missiles and PAC-2 blast fragmentation warhead semi-active missiles to counter both ballistic missile and aircraft threats.
The PAC-3 can destroy incoming missiles at an altitude of 40 kilometers but has a range of 30-60 kilometers only. On the other hand, the PAC-2 can intercept aircraft up to an altitude of 20 kilometers and a range of 160 kilometers.
While the Patriot is without a doubt the most advanced air defense system the West has to offer, it has some serious issues. The system has limited mobility and a single missile launch could cost up to $4 million. In addition, the complexity of the system makes it hard to operate and maintain.
Normally, training on the Patriot system takes a minimum of ten months. However, according to recent remarks by Kiev’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, Ukrainian officers will be trained on the system within ten weeks only.
The plan to supply Ukraine with Patriot batteries is the most significant of U.S.-led efforts to back the country against the Russian special military operation. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already vowed to “knock down” the costly system once delivered to Kiev.

The Patriot missile was a failure even during the Iraq against Scud missiles.
The fact the West is sending these weapons now demonstrates desperation. They chave claimed the Russians will run dry of munitions every week since the start of this operation. The have claimed the weapons they sent will allow Kiev a decisive Killing blow against Russia. While they regained some land, they lost tens of thousands doing so, and now continue to lose more land. Their own missiles drop from the skies and kill the country’s citizens. The Patriots may be destroyed. They will be one of the most valuable targets. Like the HIMARS, several of which have been destroyed already. If the invasion from Belarus happens, and one of these are captured, it will be a tremendous defeat beyond the west’s comprehension as well.

More recently it was a failure for intercepting the Houthi drones that targeted Saudi Arabia. I can’t say the outrageously expensive system was not battle tested, but we can say it failed until now. The MIC of course doesn’t mind that detail.

You are right. But even that system is not made to take in every hostile attack. Arrow seemes to be an increased and very expensive Patriot system to me.
These missile systems are being taken to Ukraine to create provocations, nothing more.

Well, like other systems, Russia will capture unexploded missile and be able to study them for vulnerabilities. Also, with this system, you don’t need to destroy the launchers, only the command center which is not easily moved. This system isn’t designed for a conflict where the batteries are within range of counter fire due to its lack of mobility.
